📣 Kick-off Meeting for the FANSER Endline Survey!  🎉 Yesterday, marked an exciting milestone for the FANSER team, as we kicked off the Endline Survey to track the progress of this 10-year, 40 million Euro project. Together with representatives from SUN LE, UNICEF, Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, Ministry of Agriculture, and Ministry of Health, we discussed methodologies and explored the expected outcomes of the survey, particularly in light of the ongoing drought emergency.  We took a deep dive into data recently collected from the SMART Survey, Living Conditions Monitoring Survey, and MCDP 2 midline to assess how shocks and structural rural poverty trends may impact our efforts to improve food and nutrition security in the region. We valued the engaged discussion and the guidance received from the Deputy Permanent Secretary from Luapula and the Assistant Secretary to the Permanent Secretary from Eastern Province. Next up: Training 20 enumerators and interviewing 400 target and 400 control group households, led by researchers from #IAPRI and consultants from ICON. Stay tuned for more updates as we move forward on this critical work!  💪   #GIZ #Agrifood #FANSER #FoodSecurity #Partnerships

IKI Growing Greener Project officially launched in Zambia GIZ successfully launched the International Climate Initiative (IKI) Growing Greener project in 🇿🇲Zambia at a vibrant and well-attended event on 29th August in Mwandi District of Western Province. The launch was attended by key stakeholders including government representatives, traditional leaders, community members, academia and partners. The IKI Growing Greener Project, Restoration and sustainable use of agropastoralists systems in open landscapes across Southern Africa, aims to improve soil health, enhance 🐟🦎🐦biodiversity conservation and build resilience of agropastoral communities to desertification and climate change through: 👉🏼Working with agro-pastoralists to adopt innovative land-use practices and nature-based solutions 👉🏼Developing soil and landscape restoration economies through public and private investments, market access, ecosystem valuation and green Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME) support 👉🏼Strengthening an enabling policy framework for sustainable land use, and, 👉🏼Enhancing capacity to scale up sustainable management practices across Southern Africa. Implemented in the four countries of Botswana, Madagascar, South Africa, and Zambia the project promotes the Herding for Health programme, a community-driven approach for livestock and rangeland management which uses controlled rotational herding to improve the health of livestock and land productivity and ensure less degradation. Specifically, the project will scale up the successes of Peace Parks Foundation with the restoration of one million hectares of communal rangelands, 100,000 hectares in Zambia. It also aims to increase household income of over 300 agropastoralists while creating green jobs targeting a minimum of 25 eco-rangers in Zambia. The project will also support the formulation of two or more policies that will enhance rangeland management. Through Herding for Health model, the project will fix more than 70000 tons CO2 equivalent into the soils. In Zambia, Growing Greener project is implemented by GIZ together with its consortium partners Peace Parks Foundation (PPF) and the Centre for Coordination of Agricultural Research and Development for Southern Africa (CCARDESA), in Simalaha Community Conservancy (SCC), a semi-arid region in Western Province. At regional level, Conservational International (CI) is one of the project partners. It is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) under the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and runs from October 2023 to September 2029. GIZ supports LGAZ Annual Conference   Last week, local government officials convened in Lusaka for the 68th Annual Conference of the LOCAL GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION OF ZAMBIA. This year’s theme “Visionary Local Leadership in the Face of Current and Emerging Developmental Challenges: A Call to Action” set the tone for the numerous plenary and break away sessions during the conference, covering topics such as effective #climateaction 🌍, #genderequality and socio-economic transformation. GIZ Zambia supported the conference through the Decentralisation for Development (D4D) and Good Financial Governance (GfG) Programmes. During a session on Public Sector Audits, led by GfG, commitments were made to enhance #audit and #accountability mechanisms. Key initiatives include establishing dedicated Audit Teams, digitizing 💻 processes to improve financial reporting, and embedding fiscal risk management to enhance budget credibility to tackle both the opportunities and challenges within public sector audits in relation to local authorities 🏛. D4D organized a plenary session on sustainable #urbandevelopment and affordable housing 🏘. Guest speakers from the City of Windhoek in #Namibia shared the city’s approach to upgrading informal settlements, while also enhancing #citizenengagement 🗣 in urban planning processes. In light of the high #urbanization rate and growing informal settlements, these topics are highly relevant to the Zambian local government officials and #knowledgesharing 💡across the region can inform and improve local approaches to tackle the associated challenges. We thank LGAZ for the long-standing and successful cooperation and all participants for their valuable contributions during the conference. 📸 © Local Government Association of Zambia
