We are grateful to Dr Ariadna ALBAJARA SAENZ for giving a talk last night as part of our Mental Health Education Course. This course was designed to empower and inspire young people to take action in the mental health space. Awareness is a key component of the course - however, we are providing knowledge to change makers - mental health champions that will ignite change in our communities. #Ndinewe

Today is #SuicidePreventionDay 🎗️ and I authored a Suicide Prevention Guide for Ndinewe Foundation . To produce this guide, I had a great privilege of collaborating with great mental health champions and professionals including Tatenda Kambeu Gamuchirai Chinamasa Paula Muparutsa Shaanice Manuel and Princess Gadzikwa-Chatikobo. Suicide prevention is one of my key areas of research and the statistics on the people at risk and that die by suicide are shocking. For a long time suicide has been seen as a taboo topic. However, research shows us that talking about suicide does not influence suicidal thoughts. Talking about suicide empowers people to take action. This guide is a tool to encourage action. 🎗️Act to cultivate compassion in your community 🎗️Act to encourage people to seek help if they are in need 🎗️Act to sow a seed of kindness. Act. Act. Act. Ndinewe's Suicide Prevention Guide provides information on suicide risk factors, warning signs, immediate steps to take to assist someone, lived experience, and support for the supporter. Visit ndinewe.org for access to the full guide. #Ndinewe #SuicidePrevention

Content warning: Mentions Suicide 🎗️ Suicide Prevention Day Validating others' emotions is crucial because it shows that you acknowledge their pain. When you recognise someone's emotional distress, you are able to take their feelings seriously. In addition it reduces feelings of isolation. Your validation lets them know they're not alone in their emotions. Additionally, validation creates a safe space for honest conversations. It is important to understand that validation doesn't mean agreeing with their thoughts or feelings, but rather acknowledging their emotional experiences. This empathetic approach can be a powerful tool in supporting individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts. Validation means you are hearing people and recognising they are in need of support. #Ndinewe #SuicidePrevention

*Content warning: Mentions Suicide* According to the World Health Organization (2021), most individuals facing suicidal thoughts are seeking to end the intense emotional pain they are feeling. Suicide often seems like the only option when a person feels trapped by their circumstances, overwhelmed by their emotions, or unable to see a way out of suffering. Understanding this is crucial because it highlights the importance of offering hope, support, and alternative solutions. Interventions that focus on addressing the root causes of their pain can provide relief and show them that there are ways to manage their feelings and improve their situation without resorting to suicide. By providing support and showing compassion, we can help individuals find hope and discover other ways to deal with their pain. #Ndinewe #SuicidePreventionMonth
