🌍 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗲𝗲𝗿-𝗟𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗜𝗩 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲! 🌍 Last week, the Government of Zimbabwe, in partnership with Zvandiri, proudly welcomed representatives from 14 African countries, along with technical support from World Health Organization and UNICEF. Over three days, health ministries, implementing partners, and young peer providers (CATS, NATS, AJCATS, YAPS) shared insights and progress in scaling and adapting Zvandiri’s peer-led model to each unique context. What did we learn? A lot! Here are some key highlights: ✅ 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: Led by each country’s government, we have together trained and mentored over 𝟱,𝟱𝟬𝟬 young peer counselors living with HIV, reaching and supporting more than 𝟮𝟰𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 children and adolescents to survive and thrive. ✅ 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀: In some countries, viral suppression rates have improved from 𝟱𝟬-𝟲𝟬% to over 𝟵𝟬% since implementing the model. Data also shows enhancements in mental health, and we’ve confirmed the model’s cost-effectiveness. Scaling Zvandiri is a critical step toward ending AIDS among children and adolescents by 2030. ✅ 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Governments are fully committed as implementers at scale. The 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝟵𝟱 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀-𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 for scaling and sustaining peer-provider services proved invaluable in charting the way forward. ✅ 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Some governments have already started financing the model, while others are eager to learn from their peers’ experiences. ✅ 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝘀𝗱𝗼𝗺: Bringing together passionate individuals from different countries and disciplines created an inspiring space for learning and exchange. By openly discussing shared challenges and innovative solutions, our collective approach and vision feels stronger. A heartfelt thanks to all the country teams who joined us, the Zimbabwean Ministry of Health and Child Care, our partners at The ELMA Philanthropies and Mulago for bringing us together, and the many technical and funding organizations who make this scale possible. We’re excited to carry this momentum forward, together! #SurviveAndThrive #Thrive95

Assuring health, happiness, and hope for children and young people living with HIV
About us
Zvandiri, “As I am”, is transforming young lives through peer connections to assure health, happiness, and hope. We began 18 years ago with six young people living with HIV who wanted more than just the medicines and clinic visits. They established a support group which has evolved into the Zvandiri model of community, clinic and digital health services, in partnership with governments, to deliver services to young people living with HIV. We believe our evidence-based model that connects young people with trained, mentored peers provides a holistic approach that is innovative and ensures sustainable impact. Zvandiri started in Zimbabwe and has been adopted and scaled in 8 countries with 1600 trained peers we call Community Adolescent Treatment Supporters or CATS. Our goal is to expand our Zvandiri model to 20 countries by 2030 to deliver health, happiness and hope to 1 million young people living with HIV.

We’re delighted to share our new publication on adolescent HIV and mental health! When evaluating the mental health of young people living with HIV, it’s important to measure positive as well as negative constructs (it is mental health after all!) so it is not just about anxiety, depression and PTSD for example. Our mixed scoping and systematic review highlights the importance of 15 psychological constructs including resilience, self-concept, coping and self-efficacy when measuring mental health in young people living with HIV. Zvandiri is thrilled to introduce our latest children's storybook, "As I Am," written by Anesu Mapiro and beautifully illustrated by lomedy mhako This heartwarming story follows Rudo, a child living with HIV, who finds comfort and support in Alice, a peer counsellor also living with HIV. Alice listens to Rudo's worries and helps her navigate the complexities of her daily life, including the importance of taking her medicine. Many children living with HIV may not be fully aware of their status, but they still need guidance and reassurance to understand the events in their lives. "As I Am" serves as a vital resource, reminding children that they are not alone and that there are people who care deeply about their well-being. We hope this book brings comfort and clarity to children who are confused or worried and helps them feel supported and understood.
