To make a significant impact in the 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 sector for the Vienna-Lower Austria region within the EU Horizon RURBANIVE Project EU, we have partnered up with the Stadt-Umland-Management Wien/Niederösterreich forum for urban-rural management. Together, we aim to develop regional strategies, identify best practices, and create forward-looking business models that promote sustainable circular economies. ♻️ RURBANIVE Project EU project focuses on creating synergies between rural and urban areas by fostering innovation through immersive ecosystems. It establishes Rural-Urban Co-creation Labs that address social, economic, and environmental challenges, with a focus on the circular bioeconomy, ecosystem restoration, logistics improvements, cultural heritage, and enhanced mobility. The project leverages extended reality (XR) technologies to support experimentation and policy development, aiming to build well-being economies and strengthen rural-urban relationships through sustainable business models and immersive community engagement. After a year of progress, it was fantastic to catch up with the CARDIMED EU project team in Catania. Marco Hartl, our Technical Coordinator and Ecological Engineer represented us at the meeting 😎 . Now, the exciting work begins for alchemia-nova: spreading the word about the incredible #NatureBasedSolutions (NBS) implemented in the project. We're reaching out to communities and regions across Central Europe, inviting them to adopt these innovative approaches. One such #NBS is a remarkable #GreenWall built by our partner IRIDRA. This impressive structure treats greywater from handwash basins and reuses it for toilet flushing. We had the opportunity to see it in action at a school in Ferla, Sicily. One of our key regions is Carinthia, Austria, where we're collaborating closely with BABEG | Invest in Carinthia (Antonija W. and Tanja Kogler) to drive #nature-based and #circular transformations. A huge thanks to Giuseppe Cirelli from Università di Catania and Barbara Sarnari from Svimed Centro Euromediterraneo per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile ETS for their excellent organization and hospitality. Everything was top-notch! CARDIMED EU is a Horizon Europe-funded project dedicated to boosting Mediterranean climate resilience through NBS adoption. #CARDIMED #ClimateResilience #NatureBasedSolutions #GreenInnovation #SustainableDevelopment #CentralEurope #Italy #Austria

The transition to a circular economy needs standardisation of data processes, material and product qualities. Thanks to Austrian Standards for bringing stakeholders and experts together yesterday to discuss this critical enabler. Christine Bertl (Circular Bioeconomy Scientist, alchemia-nova) presented challenges in the circular bioeconomy ♻️ and addressed regulatory needs. A special thanks to Harald Friedl for moderating this impactful event. 👏 Looking forward to deepening our collaboration!

As part of the 3rd Summer Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) School at UNIDO, Christine Bertl was invited as a guest speaker to present a case study on alchemia-novas circular products, services, and business models. Christine’s presentation focused on EU-Horizon projects such as the FUTURAL Project and RURBANIVE Project EU, including Good Practices, synergies and learnings from related projects. She also shared a 10-step methodology for implementing innovative business models in circular bioeconomy. After her talk, there was a lively discussion with thoughtful questions, followed by another engaging presentation by Elena Yaneva. After the successful session, Christine and her FFG Österreichische Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft mbH interns, Hannelore Friedrich and Arianna Nitzlader, set up a booth for further engagement. Attendees were able to gather more information about alchemia-nova and our projects and products. In the evening a dinner was held, creating an even more comfortable setting. During the meal, participants had the chance to share ideas, discuss details more thoroughly, and build stronger connections. It was a pleasure to receive so much positive feedback, genuine interest, and to make many new valuable connections. A big thank you goes to Sasha Tremblay, M.A. and her team for the excellent planning, which created such a welcoming and well-organized atmosphere that made the event truly valuable.

This Monday we, Hannelore Friedrich and Arianna Nitzlader, started our first internship day as FFG Österreichische Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft mbH interns at the research institute alchemia-nova, under the supervision of Christine Bertl. This involved traveling to Pongau to visit the local wastewater treatment plant. Our goals were to discuss the FUTURAL Project with our partners from the Regionalverband Pongau and to gain a better understanding of the plant's operations and the objectives of the EU-Horizon-project. We experienced that the ongoing project seeks to promote sustainable practices and efficient resource management by integrating various regional advantages and projects. Building on previous efforts in the local circular bioeconomy, it emphasizes using local food leftovers from tourism and improving sewage sludge treatment methods. It gave us a much greater understanding of the project and sparked our curiosity. Upon our arrival, we met the Managing Director of the Reinhalteverband Ennstal, Ing. Franz Rainer. During an extensive and demanding discussion, we became increasingly aware of the various problems that can occur in a wastewater treatment plant and the urgent need for new, innovative ideas to combat these issues. We were truly amazed by Mr. Rainer's openness to the FUTURAL Project and his transparency in sharing both the challenges and potential regional solutions. Following the in-depth discussion, Mr. Rainer offered us a detailed tour of the facility, where we gained an even deeper insight into its operations. We were impressed by the complexity and expertise required at each stage, from filtering out waste to producing biogas. This experience emphasized the importance of raising awareness about these processes and highlighted the crucial role of initiatives like those facilitated by alchemia-nova in educating young students like us. #alchemia-nova #FUTURAL #FFG #Internship pictures by Hannelore Friedrich, Arianna Nitzlader on the picture: Christine Bertl, Ing. On July 22nd, Christine Bertl visited our FUTURAL Project partners, Josef Fanninger and Stephan Maurer from Regionalverband Pongau, to plan our upcoming workshop in autumn. As the FUTURAL Project addresses social and ecological challenges in Europe's rural areas, we're co-creating digital, smart solutions. Our initiative continues to build on previous efforts focused on the circular bioeconomy, especially in utilizing local food leftovers from the tourism sector and improving sewage sludge treatment methods. These efforts represent a robust example of effective community involvement and resource management, essential for refining our strategic approach in Pongau. This meeting served as well as a kickoff for identifying potential synergies with the RURBANIVE Project EU, which emphasizes rural-urban collaborations and fosters a biocircular economy through innovative digital solutions. We are looking forward to deepening our collaboration and driving impactful solutions alongside regional decision-makers! #FUTURAL #RURBANIVE #CircularBioeconomy #Sustainability #Innovation #CommunityEngagement #alchemia-nova
