For Wiener Forschungsfest, GMI, Vienna Open Lab, and Open Science welcomed well over a thousand kids, teenagers, and adults to their research station at Vienna City Hall over the weekend. Visitors, including Mayor Michael Ludwig, met with GMI researchers to explore how plants respond to environmental stressors, particularly water scarcity. The discussions focused on the plant vascular system and how osmosis functions at the cellular level during such conditions. A human-sized, illuminated tile board allowed visitors to experience CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing first-hand. After solving a quiz, they could take their DIY plant stress experiment home with them. This major undertaking could not have been pulled off without the generous support of team members at the GMI and our collaboration partners. Between 2005 and 2006, the GMI’s six founding research groups relocated to the new building at the Vienna BioCenter, performing research under one roof for the first time. In 2006, the GMI strengthened its scientific foundation by welcoming two new research groups, led by Thomas Greb and Hisashi Tamaru. During this time, the GMI became a full member of the Vienna BioCenter. GMI group leaders participated in the VBC recess for the first time, and the institute joined the VBC PhD Program.
