Last week, 20 journalists from Germany and Austria visited the GMI and got to know the latest research by Liam Dolan and Fred Berger, as well as the PHENOPlant facility.
Info
The Gregor Mendel Institute of Molecular Plant Biology (GMI) was founded by the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 2000 in the form of a company to promote research excellence within the field of plant molecular biology. It is the only international centre for basic plant research in Austria. The GMI is located at the Vienna Biocenter within the purpose-built Austrian Academy of Sciences Life Sciences Center Vienna, completed in January 2006.

Job alert! A Junior Group Leader position is available at the GMI. We seek a researcher who will contribute to our goal of making fundamental discoveries that help us understand how plants and other autotrophic organisms function. All group leaders at the GMI enjoy complete intellectual freedom to develop their own research. Nick Irwin started his independent research group at the GMI in 2024. Recently, Nick described his experience as a new group leader. “Starting a new job and a new lab can be a daunting process, especially when you couple that with moving to a new country, but the staff and lab support at the GMI have been amazing at making sure that I had all the resources and assistance I needed in the beginning”. The biggest factor convincing Nick to start at the GMI? “I found it amazing that the whole institute has such a strong culture of collaboration. If you look at the papers that are published by GMI researchers, almost all the different research groups contribute to them, which is unheard of elsewhere. And of course, the first time I came here I was fascinated with the facilities. Once I saw them, I understood how it is possible to do research at this level. I had never worked in a place with resources like the ones we have available at GMI and the Vienna BioCenter”.
