Close to 18 000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year in Guatemala and numbers are expected to substantially increase by 2045. Experts from the IAEA, World Health Organization and IARC - International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization visited the country to help leaders set new priorities for cancer control, including strengthened training programmes, providing enhanced pain relief to patients and improving the management of patient information. #BreastCancer and cervical cancer account for 40% of newly diagnosed cases in women in Guatemala, so the experts prioritized strategies to improve prevention and early detection of these diseases. In the town of Ignace, Canada, open dialogue with locals helped secure their support for hosting nuclear power projects. Ignace recently confirmed its willingness to host a deep geological repository for Canada’s spent nuclear fuel. This positive community vote was the result of efforts by the country’s waste management organization and the municipality to educate residents on what hosting the repository would involve. Learn how open dialogue has helped more countries, such as Hungary, Japan and the United States, successfully gain the support of host communities: atoms.iaea.org/3NvyJ6N

The latest meeting of the IAEA’s Nuclear Harmonization and Standardization Initiative, held this week prior to the 1st International Conference on Small Modular Reactors and Their Applications, reported that global efforts to converge different types of small modular reactor technologies, as well as their regulatory approaches, are continuing to make strong progress. With more than 200 contributors from over 30 countries, the initiative’s industry track focused on harmonization, including end-user requirements, and collaboration on computer codes for safety and performance monitoring. The regulatory track is working closely with national regulators to build trust and understand the commonalities and differences among regulatory frameworks in different countries. The NHSI will move forward with implementing many recommendations from its working groups and providing tools to help understand regulatory commonalities and differences. atoms.iaea.org/40jSCFI

Global interest in nuclear power is growing around the world as countries aim to boost energy security and cut carbon emissions. But to achieve goals for expanding nuclear power, investment in nuclear energy must increase significantly. The IAEA’s latest Climate Change and Nuclear Power report, presented at the recent Clean Energy Ministerial #CEM15 highlights this crucial point. The report also looks at ways to attract private sector financing, a growing focus globally. 14 of the world's largest banks and financial institutions met at the recent #ClimateWeekNYC to express their willingness to help finance new nuclear projects. ⚠️ Plastic pollution has now reached Antartica. This initial finding follows a research mission by IAEA and Argentine scientists in Antarctica, part of the IAEA's #NUTECplastics initiative to monitor and combat marine plastic pollution. Samples collected from the lakes, shorelines and ocean of Antarctica were sent to the IAEA laboratories in Monaco for analysis, where it was revealed that each sample contained up to three types of microplastics. The results of the analysis will be published and shared with the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research. Learn more: atoms.iaea.org/3U5PrNA
