International #trade has brought significant opportunities for economic diversification and development. Global #supplychains, however, have also long been associated with environmental #degradation and human rights abuses. 🍂 Since voluntary commitments have proven insufficient to end harmful practices in their entirety, countries around the world are adopting sustainability-driven #regulations, imposing mandatory requirements for more sustainable production and trade. After months of hard work, the outcome document from last year's Multilateral Industrial Policy Forum (#MIPF) is out! 📙 MIPF 2024’s three guiding themes—Artificial Intelligence, Digitalization and Automation in Manufacturing; Energy Transition and Industry Transformation; and Resilient and Sustainable Supply Chains—underpinned the discussions over the two-day event. 💡 This document summarizes best practices shared by participants that have the potential to be adapted and scaled across various countries and regions, presenting real-world solutions and providing valuable insights into how industrial policies must evolve to address the demands of a rapidly changing and increasingly complex global landscape. 🔊 UNIDO organized the MIPF in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources of Saudi Arabia. Industrialization has historically been regarded as the main avenue to move upwards in the income ladder due to its potential to create a large number of well-paid, high-quality jobs. 🔬 In recent years, rapid #technological change and the automation of many industrial processes have questioned the potential of industry to drive development and create productive #jobs. 🤖 This policy brief challenges this pessimistic view. 👩🏭 As we approach International Women’s Day 2025, let’s have a look at how UNIDO helps policymakers to identify how a chosen industrialization trajectory can become more gender-just. 👨💻 As part of its Enhancing the Quality of Industrial Policies (#EQuIP) tools, UNIDO developed a tool that helps analysts and policymakers understand to what extent women participate in #manufacturing and structural#change. The objective is to for women and men to have equal opportunities to contribute to, lead and benefit from structural transformation. 🛠️ By answering strategic questions, UNIDO provides policymakers with a multifaceted analytical approach with the aim to ensure policymakers have a clear understanding of the complex issues of gender equality in the manufacturing sector. ⛑️ With the recent expansion of the #BRICS to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and possibly Saudi Arabia1 along with Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the organization is becoming an important platform for #cooperation between emerging markets. The group has been further bolstered by the addition of nine countries, namely Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan, as its official “partner countries”. 💹 As of end-2023, BRICS already represents a population of almost four billion people and a combined economy of over USD 28.5 trillion, or 27 per cent of the world’s economy, and is expected to grow rapidly.
