VIVA Energy for Birkenhead Bitumen Plant and Department for infrastructure and Transport (DIT) for Mandating WHS professionals to Surfacing work sites in SA have secured the Safety Initiative Award at the AfPA 2024 SA State Industry Awards. The VIVA Energy Birkenhead Bitumen Plant has showcased remarkable safety innovation through their 10-year offstream activity on the C320 Tank 001. This project introduced the use of chiller systems to cool the bitumen inside the tank, a method that deviates from traditional practices. By cooling the bitumen, it hardens, making it easier and safer to break off and remove. It’s a great example of applying an innovative approach that optimises the safety of front line workers whilst making the whole process more efficient and effective. The South Australian Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) has mandated the inclusion of Work Health and Safety (WHS) Representatives on all major pavement rehabilitation and construction sites within their network. The mandate stipulates that a full-time WHS representative, holding a minimum qualification of Cert IV in Work Health and Safety (or equivalent), must be present on-site for all works, including ancillary tasks. Congratulations to VIVA Energy and DIT for their well-deserved recognition and leadership in safety innovation! #AfPA #SafetyInitiative #SafetySolutions Viva Energy Australia Department for Infrastructure and Transport Downer James Lemon Viva Energy Australia Tony Aloisio Melissa Ekberg
