Thank you to Maicie Lalara to share her amazing story of the Yilkwa monster fish with us here at the Australian Sea Country Conference. "Hi my name is Maicie Lalara. My business name is Dilyimbiyaba Designs. I’m a new solo artist but my artwork has been shared overseas and around Australia. My work is in weaving, bush dyeing, making necklaces and earrings and run workshops. My most popular creation has been my bush dye story. Using natural colors, leaves, fire ashes on garments. The bush dye represents the pulling our 14 clans of land, water and seas of Groote Eylandt. Im proud of this creation. My business name is my bush name. I share the same name as my auntie from my fathers side. I am following the footsteps of my great great grandmother. She was an artist. I grew watching her making all her artwork and going with her collecting materials out in the bush.I am from Groote Eylandt and I live a remote community in Umbakumba.  The story about my Yilkwa monster fishThe ghost net travels, days, months, and weeks in the ocean sitting invisible in the deep blue sea, we call this Mukumukwa Makarda Its killing the turtle and sharks and other animals in the seaThe ghost net has picked up lots of rubbish and bits and pieces along the way. Bottle tops, lids and lighters, The ghost net washed on the land and our sea rangers have collected them to clean up the beach areas. The idea came from thinking about the journey of the ghost net and how it travelled from overseas or around Australia. I wanted to create this monster fish to tell the story of its journey. As you can see its picked up lots of rubbish along the way and it doesn’t look healthy It took me 6 weeks to create this monster fish using wire and other textiles. I also created the smaller fishes from my country, Groote Eylandt to show new journeys coming out from mangrove holes when the tides go out, the fish sleep and tide comes in the fish pops out. With the ancestors and the new generation of new years begin to visit the lands. They speak to the land and sea. We call it Makarda which means the sea. When we speak to our ancestors we tell them we are here to get fish and they allow us to catch lots and enough for our family Annindilyakwa people look after our lands and seas and create a safe place for our animals to live and grow. This keeps our culture alive and strong for next generations to come. Thank you for listening to my story. Please feel free to have a look at my fishes which are for sale." #ASCC24 #SeaCountryConference2024 #TraditionalKnowledge

A huge shout out to our Platinum Partner The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is working to deliver Australian Government priorities spanning the areas of climate change, energy, the environment, heritage and water. The department is leading development of a Sustainable Ocean Plan for Australia, which proposes a national vision for our ocean to 2040, national priorities and opportunities for collective national action. The plan identifies eight national priorities comprising four key focus areas – Climate action, First Nations, Protect and restore, and Industry – and four key enablers – Collaboration, Knowledge, Equity and inclusion and Finance. Incorporating First Nations knowledge and perspectives throughout, the plan will help sustainably manage Australia’s ocean to ensure healthy marine and coastal ecosystems and support a thriving, equitable ocean economy. As a national priority, the plan seeks to ensure that First Nations people are recognised and respected as a central part of the ocean economy and have a genuine and representative role in sea Country decision-making. Within the environment portfolio, Parks Australia supports the Director of National Parks, the federal park agency, in managing six Commonwealth national parks, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, and Australian Marine Parks. Parks Australia manages 60 Australian Marine Parks located within Commonwealth waters – those over 5.5 kilometres from the coast. Partnerships are important in managing Australian Marine Parks, and Parks Australia works with First Nations organisations, land councils and Indigenous ranger groups to establish collaborative projects for Australian Marine Parks and protect cultural values. #ASCC24 #SeaCountryConference2024 #TraditionalKnowledge

We would like to acknowledge the support that we have received from our Platinum Partner. The Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation’s (ILSC) fundamental focus is returning Country to Indigenous peoples so they can realise the social, economic, environmental, and cultural benefits of owning and managing Country. The ILSC’s long-term vision for meeting its ATSI Act mandate is for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to enjoy the rightful entitlements, opportunities and benefits that the return of country and its management brings. The ILSC’s primary grant program – Our Country Our Future – provides assistance for acquiring and managing rights and interests in land, salt water and fresh water country in order to achieve this vision. #ASCC24 #SeaCountryConference2024 #TraditionalKnowledge
