A huge shout out to our Platinum Partner The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is working to deliver Australian Government priorities spanning the areas of climate change, energy, the environment, heritage and water. The department is leading development of a Sustainable Ocean Plan for Australia, which proposes a national vision for our ocean to 2040, national priorities and opportunities for collective national action. The plan identifies eight national priorities comprising four key focus areas – Climate action, First Nations, Protect and restore, and Industry – and four key enablers – Collaboration, Knowledge, Equity and inclusion and Finance. Incorporating First Nations knowledge and perspectives throughout, the plan will help sustainably manage Australia’s ocean to ensure healthy marine and coastal ecosystems and support a thriving, equitable ocean economy. As a national priority, the plan seeks to ensure that First Nations people are recognised and respected as a central part of the ocean economy and have a genuine and representative role in sea Country decision-making. Within the environment portfolio, Parks Australia supports the Director of National Parks, the federal park agency, in managing six Commonwealth national parks, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, and Australian Marine Parks. Parks Australia manages 60 Australian Marine Parks located within Commonwealth waters – those over 5.5 kilometres from the coast. Partnerships are important in managing Australian Marine Parks, and Parks Australia works with First Nations organisations, land councils and Indigenous ranger groups to establish collaborative projects for Australian Marine Parks and protect cultural values. #ASCC24 #SeaCountryConference2024 #TraditionalKnowledge
