At last week’s ACFID Annual Conference, Arthur Larok, Secretary General of ActionAid International, shared a compelling vision of solidarity, urging us to see global challenges as interconnected. His plenary, Solidarity as a Global Currency: Building a Central Nervous System to Connect Struggles for Our Common Humanity, highlighted the strength in unity and our shared responsibility to support one another. #ACFID2024

Riverina MP. Shadow Minister for International Development and the Pacific. Husband. Proud Dad of 3.
An honour to give the keynote address at the Australian Council for International Development National Conference in my role as the Shadow Minister for International Development and the Pacific. A bittersweet event, farewelling the remarkable Marc Purcell after an impressive 15 years at the helm.

Plan International Australia is alarmed by the passing of a bill banning the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees. We stand with ACFID, the peak Australian aid body, in condemning the ban. UNRWA is the main aid provider for the more than 1.1 million children facing starvation and suffering in Gaza every day and this decision will unequivocally make an impact on the ability to deliver lifesaving aid to them. All children have the right to grow up without fear of violence yet all too often, in conflict and war, children are paying the highest price. The Australian Council for International Development unequivocally condemns the Israeli Knesset’s passing of a bill to ban United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) from operating. This legislation is a tremendous barrier to UNRWA’s humanitarian response in Gaza and the West Bank and will result in even further unbearable humanitarian consequences for Gazans. “It’s unfathomable to imagine how Palestinians, in Gaza in particular, will be responding to this news. They know the vital role of UNRWA in being one of their final lifelines," said Naomi Brooks, ACFID's Humanitarian & Public Engagement Lead Read our media release below 👇 https://lnkd.in/gwjMvecK

Conflict. Climate. The cost-of-living crisis. With the world becoming increasingly unstable, girls and children have so much to contend with but even more to offer. But, as people around the world need help more than ever, Australia's aid has shrunk to just 0.68% of our federal budget. By increasing to the modest amount of 1% we can have a huge impact on girls and children all over the world. 0.68% of Australia’s federal budget goes toward foreign aid. A slight increase to 1% of our federal budget could transform the support that vulnerable communities receive worldwide. Today, there are more people held in slavery than at any point in human history. Now is the time for Australia to lift our foreign aid contributions to bring relief to millions of people in poverty who are living in slavery. It’s time for down under to step up! Together, we can help bring safety and relief to communities worldwide and create a #SaferWorldforAll. #DownUnderStepUp
