🎉 What an amazing experience at Youth Action NSW's 2024 Youth Work Conference and Awards on beautiful Wiradjuri country last week! 🌟 🗣️Fams CEO, Susan, had the privilege of being a panellist, discussing the crucial topic of young people as victim/survivors of violence. She was joined on the panel by Maree Walk, CEO of Association of Children's Welfare Agencies and Penny Lamaro, CEO of Women's Shelter Armidale Inc. Points of discussion included the need for a specialised workforce with capacity to address the needs of young people as victims/survivors and the current funding crisis impacting the sector's capacity. 🏆And the Youth Work Awards? Wow! It was an inspiring night celebrating the incredible efforts happening across NSW to support children, young people and communities to thrive. Terrific and important opportunity to do a PhD on one of the most important areas in - family inclusion. And at a great university - Newcastle. Read below - looks fantastic.
Chair of ACHSWE, non executive board member NCOSS (2019-present). President, Australian Council of Heads of Social Work Educators (2024-). Promoting social justice through research, teaching & advocacy.
Sneak Preview: Interested in doing a PhD in Social Work at the University of Newcastle as a part of an ARC project? If you are passionate about family inclusion and want to undertake a higher degree in Social Work you may be interested in the PhD scholarship that will be advertised soon as on this National project: Embedding Parent Peer & Family Advocacy (PPFA) in Australian statutory child protection systems. Brief outline: This national project will focus on answering the questions: What is the scope and characteristics of PPFA in Australian statutory child protection systems? and, what are the opportunities to embed PPF in the Australian statutory child protection systems? Ours is the first large-scale Australian study to use a co-design and multi-stakeholder approach to build knowledge of, and capability in, PPFA. We have partnered with parents and families with lived experience of child protection systems, family and disability service agencies leading PPFA initiatives, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peak bodies, seeking to empower parents and families as partners in achieving child safety and family well-being. This PhD scholar ship will be a study into the Question in Study 3: Embedding PPFA in Australian statutory child protection systems (which represents research aim number 5). Project aims; 1. Build knowledge/resources to empower& sustain parent, family, and community led PPFA initiatives in Australian child protection systems. 2. Identify and develop the specific processes and resources required to provide parents and family caregivers with intellectual disability with safe, accessible, sustainable opportunities to be peer-parent and family advocates. 3. Understand how the unique experiences and worldviews of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents, families, and advocates can inform culturally respectful approaches to PPFA. 4. Analyse how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community initiatives can inform PPFA approaches throughout Australia. 5. Build knowledge on the scope of/ opportunities to embed, PPFA in Australian statutory child protection systems. Question is Study 3: Embedding PPFA in Australian statutory child protection systems (research aim 5) RQ3a.What is the scope and characteristics of PPFA in Australian statutory child protection systems? RQ3b. What are the opportunities to embed PPFA in Australian statutory child protection systems? Research Approach: The project will use a mixed method approach. Study 3: Will map PPFA initiatives that are embedded in policy and practice of all state and territory statutory child protection authorities. Informants: representatives from each state and territory’s statutory child protection authority and professional advocates (e.g., Legal Aid and community legal services). We hope to be able to employ an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander PhD student. Official advertisements will be posted on the UoN website.

PLACE-based work always needs a boost and investment. So good to see this investment from Dusseldorp and other Pholanthropic agencies. Well done Margot Beach and colleagues. ACWA looks forward to hearing more and working with communities who use PLACE as the agency is established.
Communities leading positive change across Australia are at the heart of Partnerships for Local Action and Community Empowerment (PLACE) the new national centre for place-based collaboration announced by Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Minister of Social Services Amanda Rishworth today at Our Place in Carlton, Melbourne. We are proud to be one of the initial supporters of PLACE as part of a $38.6 million partnership with the Australian Government, the Minderoo Foundation, Paul Ramsay Foundation, The Ian Potter Foundation, and the Bryan Foundation. PLACE is designed to strengthen and sustain the conditions for place-based initiatives like these to grow and thrive, so more communities are enabled and empowered to accelerate progress on the challenges that matter most to them. “The best way to solve issues communities face is by listening to them, developing solutions led by local people. Place-based support has and can have a profound impact, and now more Australian communities will benefit from these kinds of initiatives” Treasurer, Jim Chalmers For more information - https://lnkd.in/gNCSY52x
