Today marks a transformative moment for the arts community in Australia with the largest philanthropic gift to performing arts in our history! This morning, we announced a $30 million partnership with Edith Cowan University's Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). This contribution will fund the world-class fit out of the performance and rehearsal spaces in WAAPA’s new Perth city campus, as well as establish the Premier Visiting Artists Fund, bringing world-renowned artists to inspire and support students to reach their full potential. Set to open in 2026, WAAPA’s new home will bring more than 300 public performances a year to the heart of the city, enriching Perth’s cultural landscape and building on the Perth City Deal, jointly funded by ECU, the Australian and Western Australian Governments. This investment goes beyond facilities, it nurtures the creativity of aspiring artists and plays a vital role in building vibrant and well-connected communities. STS Leeuwin II is back on the water! After the August dismasting - and the delicate process of cutting away the destroyed masts and rigging - this is the first time the ship has moved since the accident. Today’s hour-long shakedown voyage is a crucial step in testing vital systems like steering and propulsion, as they assess the full extent of the damage before moving forward with repairs. The ultimate goal is to return Leeuwin to service, benefitting the young people of Western Australia. A small professional crew was onboard today, joined by a few dedicated volunteers to assist with line handling. A huge thanks to Jetwave Marine for providing a support tug, and to Svitzer Australia for offering a gangway after the original was destroyed in the incident. Strong foundations start early. Through our partnership with Raising Literacy Australia's Words Grow Minds campaign, we’re reaching South Australian communities to help provide crucial early childhood development support. Together, we’re ensuring every child, no matter their background, has access to programs that empower parents and foster healthy brain development. This next phase will focus on First Nations and culturally and linguistically diverse families, with deep engagement to meet their unique needs. Simple actions like talking, playing, reading, and singing can unlock the potential of young minds. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gvert7jt Kate Ellis Tammy Prior Ana Nieto

Introducing Allan Myers AC, KC, as the new Chair of Minderoo Foundation. A respected Australian barrister and philanthropist, Allan has served on the Minderoo Board since 2014 and is renowned for his contributions to the philanthropic sector. In 2016, Allan was appointed as a Companion of the Order of Australia for “eminent service to the community through philanthropic leadership in support of major visual arts, higher education, medical research and not-for-profit organisations, to law, and to professional learning programs.” Allan replaces Chair Dr Andrew Forrest AO and Co-chair Nicola Forrest AO, who will both step aside but continue serving as non-executive directors of Minderoo. In a joint statement, the Forrests said that with Minderoo now well established as one of Asia-Pac's leading philanthropies it was an appropriate time to step aside from their respective chair duties. CEO John Hartman welcomed Allan’s appointment, highlighting that his commitment to Minderoo’s values and passion for driving a positive impact make Allan an ideal leader as we embark on our new 2030 Strategy. We’re excited to share incredible insights from the ongoing shellfish reef restoration in the Swan-Canning Estuary, a collaborative project led by The Nature Conservancy in Australia. Over 12 months ago, 24 individual shellfish reefs were constructed across four sites, spanning 6 hectares, with remarkable results. Recent monitoring shows a thriving marine ecosystem with increased biodiversity, including Leatherjackets, Pink Snapper, Western Gobbleguts, and natural oyster and scallop settlements. 🦪🐠 🌊 These reefs are not only transforming underwater life but also boosting water quality by filtering and improving the local environment. As the reefs mature, they will continue to provide essential habitats for a range of species, playing a critical role in restoring one of Australia’s most threatened marine ecosystems. Ongoing monitoring ensures the reefs’ success and helps inform future restoration efforts across the country, as we aim to restore 60 reefs by 2030. Special thanks to the project collaborators: Lotterywest, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, and the broader community for making this project a reality. 📸 Photo credits: Paul Day from Carijoa, Scott Breschkin and Anita Thomas from The Nature Conservancy Australia

We're boosting our commitment to urgent humanitarian aid in Gaza to more than AUD$40 million, with a focus on supporting partners delivering meals to those on the edge of famine. Today, Minderoo announced US$5 million in funding for World Central Kitchen helping provide over 1.5 million meals in Gaza. Another US$5 million will go to the United Nations' World Food Programme. There will also be a US$2.5 million contribution to help address the serious health risks caused by water scarcity and inadequate sanitation via UNICEF Australia, and we are increasing last mile delivery capacity through Anera and Global Empowerment Mission. Since October 2023, Minderoo has been helping tens of thousands of people in Gaza by providing safe water, sanitation, medical supplies, consultations, and food aid. Nicola Forrest AO shared, “It is heartbreaking to see the suffering of civilians in Gaza, especially children, who suffer disproportionately as innocent victims of conflict.” Dr. Andrew Forrest AO is calling for more support to help families and children in Gaza. “We want to see the philanthropic and private sector respond more strongly to the humanitarian needs in Gaza.” Stay updated on our work and impact – subscribe to our e-news: https://bit.ly/4dc6tAp 📸 Dr. Andrew Forrest with Erin Gore, CEO of World Central Kitchen 📸 Images from the ground in Gaza supplied by World Central Kitchen

Work to safely remove all damaged spars, rigging and masts from STS Leeuwin II is now complete but it's still too early to determine a detailed timeline of any repairs to Leeuwin. Thank you to the volunteers whose dedication and generosity make the Leeuwin a truly community-run operation. Along with the support of the entire WA community, they are the lifeblood of the Leeuwin. It will be community support that ultimately sees the Leeuwin sail again and return to providing life-changing experiences for generations of young Western Australians.
