We are currently witnessing wildlife loss at an alarming rate. 💔 Across almost all categories of plants and animals, the leading cause of extinction is habitat destruction due to land clearing – and the vast majority of land clearing is to graze cattle for the beef and dairy industries, and to raise crops to feed farmed animals. Research suggests that a shift to plant-based food could see global land use for agriculture reduced by 75% – and still feed the human population! Today on Threatened Species Day, discover how eating more plant-based meals helps both farmed *and* wild animals: https://lnkd.in/g-yB_i4F

Every night across South Australia, families of kangaroos are killed by shooters while their helpless joeys are either decapitated, bludgeoned, or escape, only to die without the protection of their mothers. Perhaps even more alarming is the fact that there are plans underway to intensify this brutal slaughter. Ignoring growing concerns from expert ecologists around the country, the SA Government has continued to increase the commercial “quota” of kangaroos it’s permitting to be slaughtered – this year’s commercial killing quota is 577,000, up tens of thousands from last year and over one hundred thousand more than 2022. It’s time to shine a light on the sad reality for kangaroos and wallabies in SA. An inquiry is long overdue. If you’re in SA, use our form to send a letter to your MP now to support the motion of an inquiry into kangaroo shooting: https://lnkd.in/gMQmqDss

This year, up to half a million kangaroos and wallabies in South Australia will be shot and killed as part of the commercial trade, or at a land manager's request. This number doesn't even include joeys, who are killed as the collateral damage that the industry and SA Government would prefer caring citizens like you didn't know about. But thanks to a growing number of compassionate advocates, there is a push not only to bring this cruelty to light, but also to urge governments to end it. Recently, a motion was raised in SA parliament calling for a Government Inquiry into the shooting of Kangaroos in the state. But for an Inquiry to go ahead, the motion needs support to pass. If you're in South Australia, please join us in urging your MP to support this important inquiry by sending a quick email now: https://lnkd.in/gMQmqDss

Black Caviar — one of Australia's most famous horses — has died. She was 17 years old, and been 'retired' from racing since 2013. But there was no rest for the 'champion' mare. Her only reward for winning millions of gambling dollars for her owners was to then be treated like a breeding machine for the rest of her life. In 10 years, Black Caviar was impregnated — a process involving applying a restraint device to her face that was tightened if she protested — an exhausting nine times, so that her foals could be used for racing and breeding. It is reported that she developed mastitis — an infection unique to breastfeeding mothers — while pregnant with her ninth foal. She then developed a severe and extremely painful condition known as laminitis. She was killed soon after giving birth. Tragically, her foal has also since passed away. While we and so many others mourn the loss of this beautiful horse, we also remember the many others who 'disappear' every year without fanfare or recognition. The horses and foals who are too slow, old, sick, injured or otherwise 'unviable' for racing, who we will never hear about. They all deserve to be mourned, to be known, and remembered. They all deserve to be loved for who they are, not only valued by how much gambling money their bodies can generate. No longer a 'racehorse'. No longer a 'broodmare'. No longer a commodity. Black Caviar was a thinking, feeling individual who was worth so much more than gambling money. And now, she is finally free.

A massive rescue and rehabilitation operation has been unfolding in Tasmania after the RSPCA successfully shut down the state’s biggest puppy farm. Many of the 250 dogs surrendered by 'Tasmania Labradoodles', which faced dozens of charges of overbreeding, have never been in contact with a human. One poor dog was described as being ‘paralysed by fear’, with others suffering from extreme matting, ear infections and hernias. Now, thanks to a compassionate collaboration between RSPCA Tasmania, North East Animal Sanctuary Tasmania, Brightside Farm Sanctuary and Dogs' Homes of Tasmania , these dogs are finally getting the love and care they always deserved. For the first time ever, they are receiving proper vet care, grooming, regular nutritious meals, socialisation and enrichment through toys, walks and cuddles. And as their healing journey begins, one by one we are starting to see them being transformed by the touch of human kindness showing just how resilient and forgiving these beautiful animals can be. Puppy farming is legal across Australia. While some states have caps on breeding and living conditions may vary, one thing they all have in common is that they treat animals who inherently crave companionship as nothing more than breeding machines. They deny them everything that makes a dog’s life worth living. And as thousands of dogs are killed in shelters each year because there aren’t enough good homes to go to, puppy farmers just keep on breeding — adding fuel to the fire of this cycle of suffering. On its website, Tasmania Labradoodles states the "family business" are "dedicated breeders of the highest-quality, multi-generation labradoodles". The truth as we’ve now discovered is that the dogs inside were enduring a living nightmare. And they’re not alone. Investigations in every state of Australia have uncovered dogs in puppy farms leading a similar, miserable existence. Australia is often called a nation of dog lovers but this love is unwittingly fuelling a cruel and callous industry. The stark reality is that this puppy farm only existed because people kept buying their puppies. The best way to break this cycle of suffering is to refuse to be part of it. By adopting your next best friend, you will not only ensure you aren‘t unwittingly supporting a cruel puppy factory — you will also save a life. Rescue pets come in all shapes, sizes, breeds, ages, and are suitable for every lifestyle and home. All they are missing is someone to love.
