To feed or not to feed? While it may seem like a kind gesture, WIRES advises against feeding native birds for several crucial reasons. Read to understand the impact artificial feeding can have on their health, behavior, and the delicate balance of our ecosystems. Native birds thrive best on their natural diet – let's keep them happy and healthy in their environment! 💚

We are excited to share that WIRES was awarded a second grant from Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife (FNPW) under their NSW Curb Wombat Mange Program. The New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has partnered with the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife (FNPW) to provide targeted funding of up to $2 million to the New South Wales volunteer wildlife rehabilitation sector and Aboriginal community organisations to purchase and use the approved chemicals and equipment needed to treat mange in free-living wombats. The grant will be used to purchase medication and treatment supplies, like burrow flaps. Having appropriate equipment allows us to continue to safely provide specialised treatment for mange affected wombats in their natural environment. Thank You for Helping Impacted Wildlife 💚 WIRES is deeply grateful to everyone who reached out to report native wildlife injured, orphaned, or displaced by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Since the cyclone’s landfall last Saturday, WIRES Emergency Responders Kyana and Erin have been on the ground rescuing birds, bats, macropods, and reptiles impacted by the storm. They’ve also worked alongside WIRES volunteers, helping transport wildlife and deliver critical supplies to carers. Between our Emergency Response Team and dedicated volunteers, WIRES has carried out over 150 rescues. Meanwhile, our 24/7 Wildlife Rescue Office has responded to hundreds of calls, providing advice and support. This incredible collective effort wouldn’t be possible without you, and we’re truly grateful for your support. With conditions now easing, our Emergency Responders have been advised to return home. A number of flood warnings are still in place for Clarence, Orara and Richmond Rivers. An Eastern long-necked turtle was recently found burying her eggs just one metre from the footpath of a busy road. Worried for their survival, and as it was in such a concerning proximity to the road, a member of the public called WIRES for help. WIRES volunteer Inga arrived and delicately collected the eggs. After assessing them she sadly established that only two were viable and developing, so took them into care. Once hatched, the tiny turtles were returned to a creek within the area they were discovered. After a brief pause at the water’s edge, they happily swam off to begin their new lives in the wild. Freshwater turtles in NSW face many threats. Introduced predators such as foxes and pigs destroy over 90% of turtle nests in some areas, while hatchlings that do survive face dangers from birds, fish, and other predators. Drought, habitat destruction, illegal fishing nets, boat collisions, and pollution all take a toll on turtle populations. How you can help: ✅ Dispose of rubbish properly and collect litter near waterways ✅ Report illegal netting or trapping ✅ Drive carefully near turtle habitats, especially in nesting season ✅ Report sick or injured turtles to your local wildlife service Under NSW law, having native turtles without a license is illegal, and heavy penalties apply. If you suspect unlawful activity, report it to the Environment Line at 131 555 or the Fishers Watch hotline at 1800 043 536.

WIRES Ltd reposted this
For World Wildlife Day today, we’re tree-mendously thrilled to donate $100,000 to WIRES Ltd towards a much-needed second koala rehabilitation centre in NSW. Last year alone, WIRES received almost 900 calls to rescue sick, injured, orphaned and displaced koalas, and this second site will significantly reduce travel time for our fluffy friends needing urgent care. “As koalas are listed as endangered, increasing the number of koalas that we can successfully release back into the wild may be critical for the long-term survival of the species,” WIRES Chief Operating Officer Kyla Shelley said. Find out more about WIRES’ wonderful work in the video and read more here: https://lnkd.in/gB-wnMje #CreatePositiveImpacts #WorldWildlifeDay
