For Kristie, a lack of confidence impacted her ability to meet employers about potential work opportunities. Together, they updated her resume, improved her interview skills, and even purchased suitable work clothes. Kristie soon succeed in securing a role as a receptionist at Helping Solutions, supporting the daily operations of the business. It proved to be the perfect opportunity for Kristie and within eight months, she progressed into a Human Resources role, becoming an indispensable part of the team. “I honestly don’t know what we would do without Kristie,” said her employer, Rhiannon. Celebrating our DES superstars – meet Maddy! Swimming teacher Maddy was one of the first young people we featured in our showcase of Disability Employment Services stories - and we're sharing again this week following Sunday's #WorldCerebralPalsyDay. Growing up with cerebral palsy, an intellectual disability, and epilepsy, Maddy and her parents knew she was capable of overcoming challenges. When it came to finding a good job, Maddy reached out to APM Employment Services for support. And from the start of her work in the DES program it was clear she was a positive and dedicated young adult with a strong work ethic. Looking for an opportunity to enter the teaching environment, Maddy impressed the team at her local swimming complex. Together with her APM employment consultant they set up a role that would lead to Maddy supporting the swimming instructors and learning how to teach young swimmers in the pool. Since we shared Maddy’s story we’ve met many parents of young people with disability who say her video encouraged them to explore career opportunities with their children after they left school. See Maddy’s story and more videos of people who have transformed their lives with employment, at apm.net.au/des #GoodNews #DisabilityEmployment #Inclusion #Careers #EnablingBetterLives
