#Medical #physicists from ARPANSA’s Australian Clinical Dosimetry Service (#ACDS) have worked with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to develop global radiotherapy audits. ARPANSA has developed a #quality #assurance method that can be used #internationally to accurately measure the #radiotherapy dose and treatment placement. This protects radiotherapy patients around the world from radiation by making sure that the correct radiation dose is given and that it is being directed at the cancer and not healthy organs. Their work has been published in the international journal, Medical Physics. Learn more about this on our website: https://lnkd.in/gTJ8m4B6

A case study in our latest Annual Report takes a deep dive into #ARPANSA’s impact on #nuclear #security and #radiation #protection on the global stage. 🌏 In the past year, ARPANSA has continued to represent Australia by collaborating with a range of bodies, including the: ➡️ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) ➡️ United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) ➡️ International Commission on Radiation Protection ➡️ World Health Organization ARPANSA also plays a key role in a range of Pacific programs, including an IAEA-funded partnership with the Republic of the Marshall Islands government to support the development of a sovereign radiation monitoring capability in the region. One of the year’s highlights was our participation in the International Conference on Nuclear Security (ICONS) in Vienna. This event is a vital platform for sharing best practices in nuclear security. ARPANSA, along with other Australian agencies like the Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office (ASNO), Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) supported #Australia’s involvement, hosting sessions on national collaborative approaches and future aspirations in nuclear security. Our CEO, Dr. Gillian Hirth AO, and staff contributed to important discussions, including gender equality in shaping nuclear security. Australia's active engagement in this, and many other international events, shows our commitment to enhancing nuclear safety and security worldwide. Happy Birthday to the late Marie #Curie and Lise Meitner! 🎉 Not only do they share a birthday, but these prominent #physicists are the only two women to have an element on the periodic table named after them - element number 96 curium, in Marie Curie's honour, and element number 109 meitnerium, in Lise Meitner's honour. Marie Curie is renowned for her pioneering #research into #radioactivity and for winning two Nobel Prizes in two different fields. Lise Meitner is known for a number of accomplishments including becoming the first woman to become a full professor of physics in Germany at the University of Berlin in 1926. She was also the first to discover, along with long time science partner Otto Hanh, #nuclear fission. Join us in celebrating them! ARPANSA maintains the Australian National Radiation Dose Register (ANRDR) which houses data from #uranium #mining, workers at Commonwealth entities and some #medical facilities. The ANRDR monitors occupational radiation exposures nationally to ensure workers in these sectors are receiving doses below the annual dose limit (20 mSv). Our 2023 report shows that 98% of workers in our dataset received a dose of less than 3 mSv per year and no worker received a dose greater than 6 mSv. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g_rTyW2S
