Have you hit the ‘Oh crap!’ moment? “People often ask when they should start planning for retirement. And there’s no better time than right now,” says Katrina McPhee, Aware Super’s Chief of Staff and Group Executive, Advocacy and Engagement. The reality is, we know it’s hard for people to see further than 15 years ahead, and as a result, most people aren’t engaged with their super until they hit what we call the ‘oh crap!’ moment. When I retire, should I move my super into cash, or withdraw it as a lump sum? What if I’m forced into retirement earlier than planned? Will I be eligible to get anything from the Government, like the age pension? And, is a self-managed super fund (SMSF) a better option for me? These are four of the most common member retirement questions our advice team gets asked. Peter Hogg, Aware Super’s General Manager of Guidance & Advice shares some answers.

What does the word “retirement” mean to you?  Australia’s retiree population is growing, and it’s estimated to reach 15-20% of the overall population by 2030.
