"Pie in the sky stuff" That's how a lot of people felt about the building workers' inspirational campaign for superannuation when it kicked off in 1984. Forty years and almost $4 trillion later, universal super is something that is often taken for granted. Watch Cbus Chair Wayne Swan and some of our founding members reflect on that campaign was like and what it achieved for working Australians. #superannuation #insurance Read the relevant PDS and TMD to decide what’s right for you. Fantastic to see our Head of Debt and Alternatives Linda Cunningham share her deep insight and experience with attendees at CII (Centre for Institutional Investors)

Head of Debt & Alternatives at Cbus Super Fund

It was a pleasure to moderate a panel about `Managing through the Cycle’ at the CII (Centre for Institutional Investors), Private Credit conference earlier this month.  There are lots of newspaper headlines suggesting private credit is “new” but not for those of us that have been participating in the market for many years and have seen many cycles. Great insight from Alicia Gregory, Blue Owl Capital and Raj Makam Oaktree Capital Management, L.P., evidencing their deep knowledge of private credit.  There were some great questions from the audience and I was happy to be able to share how that for Cbus Super Fund, having the hybrid approach of both using external managers and having its own internal private credit / direct debt strategy, provides real benefits for Cbus members. Thank you to the great team at CII for inviting me to participate.

The much-loved Regent Theatre in Melbourne is part of the Cbus story. Our investing ethos and direction really came to the fore with the redevelopment of the Regent Theatre, finalised in 1996. Prior to this, the Theatre had been closed for 20 years and the many attempts to demolish it had been thwarted by green bans. There was the opportunity for Cbus to get involved in funding the redevelopment with Staged Developments Australia, creating jobs for building workers and then with the Theatre in operation again, ongoing jobs in the arts and supportive industries. One of our founders Tom McDonald described this as an investment of ‘dynamic dimensions’. What a great way to describe how we deliver strong long terms and create jobs for members, which continues to this current day with the success of Cbus Property.* *Cbus Property Pty Ltd is a wholly-owned entity of Cbus Super and is responsible for the development and management of a portfolio of Cbus Super’s property investments. Forty years ago, building and construction workers made a decisive move to save a hard fought for $9 a week wage rise for their retirements. The Fund was underway from 1 July 1984 and on worksites signing up was called getting on the ‘Bus’. The Fund could barely keep up with the demand with 30,000 members joining in the first six months. Cbus Super Chair Wayne Swan says Cbus is proud to be talking to our members about our heritage and history as it’s a story that needs to be told*. “The building workers campaign was audacious and visionary. “Our compulsory superannuation system all started thanks to the brave unionists who took industrial action, but ultimately it could only be delivered by unions, employers and Labor governments working together. “We can’t take the reasons why workers across the country have growing super balances for granted. “We should not forget the generational difference our founding members made for hard working Australians and for our economy. “With the 40th anniversary of Cbus this month, I want all of us to pay tribute to those men and women who created this lasting, deep structural change in our economy and to retirements.” *As at 1 July 2024 Read the relevant Product Disclosure Statement and Target Market Determination to decide what’s right for you. Our members work hard. We are determined to work just as hard to make sure their hard work pays off. That’s particularly important when it comes to our brand. Last week, Group Head of Brand & Marketing Potta Findikidis appeared as a panellist at the Mumbrella Finance Marketing Summit. Potta spoke about Cbus’s strong brand and connection to members, highlighting the way we talk to our hard-working members about purpose and ESG. Panellists also spoke about the power of embedding brand purpose in organisational strategy, agreeing that it should be considered a central strategic element integral to an organisation’s success. Thanks to Mumbrella for the opportunity. Read the relevant PDS and TMD to decide what’s right for you. Call 1300 361 784 or visit cbussuper.com.au
