Last week, Vice Admiral Peter W. Gautier visited Birdon’s Portland, CT facility to get an update on the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) 47’ Motor Lifeboat (MLB) Service Life Extension Program (SLEP). The Vice Admiral and other Coast Guard visitors received an update on the program’s progress and shared positive feedback about the ships that have been delivered. “We’re proud to support the Coast Guard in the important work they do for our country,” said Program Manager Patrick K., “The MLB program is a vital part of that work, and we’re committed to continue delivering high quality, military standard vessels.” As part of the visit, Vice Admiral Gautier inquired about ship modifications Birdon is doing as part of the program. He also reiterated the importance of the 47’ MLB in supporting USCG operations and shared feedback from active Surfmen on the current status of the MLBs that have already been delivered. The 47’ MLB is the Coast Guard’s primary search and rescue platform, and as an all-weather fast response vessel, they are used to patrol vast areas of the country’s coastline. These vessels are designed to operate in surf up to 20 feet, heavy weather with seas of 30 feet combined with 50 knot winds, and are rollover capable, meaning that if capsized, the vessels self-right and can continue operations. #MakeItHappen #MLB #MotorLifeBoats #USCoastGuard

The Birdon decommissioning team are looking forward to exhibiting at EXA - Energy Exchange Australia, previously known as AOG Energy. For over 40 years, EXA has cemented itself as a critical event in the oil, gas, and energy market. Held annually in Perth, EXA builds on the strong legacy AOG Energy has established but with a modern outlook and new opportunities. EXA tackles key industry challenges, encourages disruptive conversations, and showcases prominent influential industry figures who are making a difference in the energy transition, accelerating us to a decarbonised future. Our team will be showcasing our disposal and recycling capabilities, including our recent projects, and our innovative approaches. We'll be ready to talk through the latest technologies and techniques that we use to ensure safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible processes. ☕ PLUS - we will have a barista service at our stand, providing freshly brewed coffee to all our visitors. 😋 We look forward to connecting with industry peers and exploring new opportunities together. #EXA2025 #MakeItHappen #Decommissioning

Meet Vera Igic, an Electrical Engineer II based out of Birdon’s New Orleans office. As an Electrical Engineer II, Vera works closely with senior electrical engineers to develop electrical designs for the Waterways Commerce Cutter (WCC) project. “I was originally certified in power and energy systems,” said Vera, “I didn’t suspect I would go into the shipbuilding industry, but now I can’t imagine working anywhere else.” Now at the transition period for WCC, Vera talks about her experience helping transition from design to production. “I’m really excited to start seeing the vessels come together” said Vera, “seeing my designs alive and in person is a very fulfilling experience.” Vera wasn’t always an engineer – she was originally pre-med at Louisiana State University (LSU) before deciding to become an electrical engineer. Vera graduated in 2023 from the University of New Orleans. “The work we do as engineers is very important,” said Vera, “technology is constantly evolving, so there’s always something new to learn around every corner.” Since joining Birdon, she’s worked particularly closely on the WCC project’s Electrical Plant Design Report (EPDR) and on the ship’s power generation and distribution. In celebration of National Engineering Week, Vera added that “the best advice I have for engineers is to keep learning and stay open.” #MakeItHappen #TeamBirdon #Engineersweek #Welcometothefuture

Introducing the new look Birdon. Some of you may have noticed a fresh new look rolling out across Birdon. This evolution to our brand marks an exciting milestone in our journey as we continue to grow and expand globally. From our first dredging contract in Port Macquarie in 1977 to operating across six locations in Australia, five in the US, and delivering projects throughout Europe and Asia, we’ve come a long way. As our business evolves, so too does our brand—ensuring it reflects who we are today and where we’re headed. Our refreshed identity embodies Birdon’s commitment to whole-of-life maritime solutions—from design and construction to maintenance and decommissioning. The bold, impactful design and abstract propeller icon symbolise our maritime ingenuity, forward momentum, and future-focused approach. While our look has changed, one thing remains the same: we’re still driven by our founder Jim Bruce’s motto—“make it happen”—a testament to our team’s unwavering can-do spirit. #MakeItHappen #MaritimeIngenuity #Design #Build #Maintain #Decommission

Birdon team members Martin Minogue, Sarah Yuen and Meg Teasdell were among the hive of activity at Deadly Science HQ in Port Macquarie yesterday, as they helped to pack books and lego to be shipped to over 600 regionally and rurally based schools throughout Australia. Deadly Science provides science, technology, engineering & maths education & resources for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander learners in Australia. A/Prof Corey Tutt OAM started DeadlyScience after finding out that remote schools were often critically under-resourced. Knowing that books & resources change lives, DeadlyScience wanted to ensure all schools have access to the history of science by providing resources that connect schools to the First Scientists of Australia; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. #MakeItHappen #Localssupportinglocals #STEM

Our Port Macquarie site has been abuzz this week as we welcomed nine new apprentices to the Birdon family. The 2025 cohort was selected from 117 candidates and reflects our ongoing commitment to creating career opportunities for Australians while strengthening our sovereign ship design, building, maintenance and decommissioning capacity. Our Apprenticeship Program is building Australia’s maritime engineering workforce, providing pathways for young people and mature age workers. Our investment in local talent is our commitment to safety, ongoing mentoring, and development opportunities beyond the completion of apprenticeships. This year’s intake includes four female apprentices - two Boilermakers, one Painter/Blaster and one Electrician – in line with Birdon’s goal of increasing female representation in its production teams. Birdon is setting benchmarks for gender inclusion and remuneration equality within the engineering industry. The company’s gender pay gap stands at -8.8%, compared to the industry average of 13.2%. Thank you to 7NEWS Australia - Coast, who shared our story so beautifully, capturing some of our new superstars and ofcourse our fabulous Head of People and Culture Martin Minogue. #MakeItHappen #TeamBirdon #PortMacquarie
