All APRA-regulated insurers and super funds will be included in the Financial Accountability Regime (FAR) from March 15. FAR will help further strengthen super funds and their responsibility to their members by clarifying the accountability of directors and executives. In the article below Steve Hill, Group Executive, People and Workplace at Aware Super spoke to Investment Magazine journalist Glenda Korporaal about how the fund is preparing for FAR and the work Aware Super has done over the past four years to strengthen its governance, risk, and compliance frameworks. "The application of FAR to super funds is an important step in clarifying and documenting accountabilities, formalising delegations, and enabling clear decision-making," says Steve. We welcome the Federal Government’s plan to set new member service standards for the super industry. Common service standards in areas like insurance claims and waiting times are good news for super members, and we believe this will encourage better service across the industry and allow consumers to easily compare service performance between funds. We're looking forward to working with the government and others to help ensure the standards that are developed are strong and meaningful. We've done a lot of work to improve our own member services, including bringing our administration inhouse and digitising most services for a smooth, helpful experience. “The ability of a superannuation fund to provide service and support can make a profound difference to key moments in people’s lives,” Aware Super CEO Deanne Stewart said. There's always room for improvement though, and this remains our focus.

We’re excited to welcome energy industry expert Stephanie McGregor to our Direct Asset Committee. Stephanie has extensive executive and regulatory experience in the energy industry, with a particular focus on renewables both in Europe and Australasia. The Direct Asset Committee (DAC) assists the Investment Committee with research, due diligence and selection of direct assets for the fund, as well as monitoring the performance of these assets post-acquisition. Direct investment in high quality assets in property, infrastructure and other sectors is a key strategy for Aware Super to maximise long term returns for our members, with assets exposed to the energy transition a strategic focus. The depth of investment expertise and oversight of decision making the DAC provides is also key to Aware Super’s goal of outperformance. . . . . . 🔎 Consider if Aware Super is right for you and the PDS and TMD at aware.com.au/pds

A strong focus on resilience and risk management is crucial to protecting our members’ superannuation and helping them achieve their goals for retirement. Speaking with Investment Magazine at the end of December, Jane Couchman, Chief Risk Officer and Group Executive, Sustainability, shared how the fund has embedded operational resilience and risk management frameworks, in line with Australian Prudential Regulation Authority's new standards for the super industry. As reported by Simon Hoyle, Jane says operational resilience is ensuring we “manage our operational risks and minimise the impact of disruption or harm to members and the broader financial systems”. This is achieved by ensuring operational and financial resilience are incorporated into our risk management and financial management frameworks and governance, as well as our recovery, exit planning and resolution planning.
