Always keen to hear and talk about reducing waste, today CRA attended the #zerowastefestival put on by Zero Waste Victoria at Fed Square. Andrew Swann took part in a panel discussion, discussing some of the great repurposing activities by the panelists and provided some useful tips on remaining compliant with Victoria’s Environment Protection Act. It was a pleasure to present to such a motivated audience and field some great questions.

We have been at the 2024 National Food Waste Summit at the Melbourne Convention Centre for the last two days. Through conversation with attendees and exhibitors, it is clear that there is great enthusiasm and many great ideas to reduce the volume of food waste each year. An interesting fact that we heard discussed… 30% of food waste is generated behind the farm gate through excess material not finding a market. This could be through excess crops from a bumper growing season, the material not meeting the aesthetic requirements of the big supermarkets, or for a range of other reasons. The good news is there are some great solutions to help redistribute this valuable resource. The app Refresh:Food is a great example, it offers a platform that connects farmers with excess stock to potential buyers, offering a second chance for sale, before disposal. (No affiliation). The bad news? Unfortunately, even with all of these great food diversion ideas, disposal of non-reusable food will still be required. In Victoria alone, we dispose of nearly 1 million tonnes (yes, six zeros) per year of food waste to landfill. The question is, is government regulation helping or hindering the organics processing market to meet this pressing need? #endfoodwaste #circularresourcesaustralia

CRA's very own Andrew Swann recently presented at an online Capgemini Invent Sustainability Learning Cafe event. As always, his infectious enthusiasm and his excellent subject matter knowledge resulted in a super interesting and engaging session. Our guy knows his stuff!
We were thrilled to host special guest Andrew Swann from Circular Resources Australia at our latest Capgemini Invent Sustainability Learning Cafe and discuss the complex world of waste: how much we produce, how it is (often poorly) handled and how much opportunity there is for us to do better! An eye opening experience but thankfully some great innovations happening and lots more for us to learn. #getthefutureyouwant #roadtonetzero #bethechange #futureleaders #capgeminiinvent #frog #sustainability

For those who are confused by the compostable packaging issues facing the composting industry, Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia has posted some excellent points. Great piece by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) within the link too. It’s worth a watch!
Did you know the used packaging National Environment Protection Measures (NEPM) commenced in 1998 - making it 25 years old - and Australian Packaging Covenant (APCO) is now 13 years old? These initiatives were supposed to deal with problematic packaging. Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)’s 7.30 has highlighted this has not worked. It is now time for a mandated system that ensures only safe, reuseable and recoverable packaging is placed on the market with the generators of the packaging forced to take real responsibility - not simply passing it on to the WARR sector to solve. WMRR has high hopes today's Environment Ministers’ Meeting will see them come together once and for all and act decisively on both packaging and banning PFAS. #wmrr #warr #recycling #pfas #circulareconomy Gayle Sloan
