About us

The Department of Communities is Western Australia’s major human services department that brings together vital services and functions that support individual, family and community wellbeing. Working closely with our partners across government and the community services sector, our areas of responsibility include disability services, child protection and family support, housing, community services, prevention of family and domestic violence, seniors, ageing, veterans, volunteering and women’s interests. We also lead the State’s social recovery, following challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. We support many Western Australians, with a focus on some of the most vulnerable people in our state. The job we do is rewarding but can be challenging. People, place and home is at the core of everything we do and why we do it. We work for the people who make up our communities across Western Australia; we help people be the best they can be. We focus our efforts on building places that are inclusive and connected and offer everyone the opportunity to prosper. And we support children and families so that they can have a physically and emotionally secure place to call home. We promote a diverse workforce and embrace a high standard of equal opportunity, health and safety, and ethical practice. Join us and work in a role where you can make a real difference to the lives of children, families and communities throughout Western Australia. • In celebration of #NationalCarersWeek, we’ve created a special thank you card to honour the unsung heroes in our community—Western Australian carers. 🎉⭐💙 Do you know someone who is a carer? Many carers balance the demands of caring with full-time work or life’s other responsibilities, and we invite you to show your appreciation by sharing a thank you note with the carers in your life. • Today, our Office of Homelessness team attended the Australian Zero Homelessness Summit, held in Western Australia for the first time, and we were honoured to sponsor the event. The summit offered valuable insights into advancing the delivery of social and affordable housing, and we extend our thanks to the Australian Alliance to End Homelessness and the Western Australian Alliance to End Homelessness for their ongoing support in serving our communities most vulnerable citizens. Increasing housing supply remains a top priority as we collaborate with the industry to meet current and future housing needs across WA. • Last week, we celebrated the launch of our Koorlangka Bidi: WA Youth Action Plan 2024 – 2027. The event was a vibrant celebration at Perth City Farm, featuring over 20 interactive stalls from various other agencies. The plan reflects common themes identified during our consultation process, which included more than six months of consultations with over 2,000 young people aged 10 to 25 years old across WA. These themes have shaped the plan's six focus areas: amplifying young voices, climate action, achieving goals, cost of living, supporting wellbeing, and embracing diversity and inclusion. A huge thank you to everyone involved in the process! 👏 👀To view the plan, visit https://docsm.au/3YiJ8Zz
