A turning point for disability-led research in Australia The National Disability Research Partnership (NDRP) has launched its first independent grant round, investing $600,000 in disability-led research on the safety of people with disability, with more funding available in late 2025. This marks the start of a long-term funding commitment to drive systemic change and ensure people with lived experience lead the research that shapes policy and improves support systems. “This funding gives power back to people who have traditionally been sidelined,” said NDRP CEO, Mary Sayers. “It’s about practical solutions, led by people with disability who live the experience and understand what’s needed.” The Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability exposed widespread mistreatment and systemic failures. The NDRP funding supports research that will directly impact policy and systems change, focusing on the safety of people with disability across the NDIS, health, education, housing, and accessible communities. The Australian Government has committed almost $14 million to support the NDRP as part of Australia’s Disability Strategy, ensuring people with disability are at the forefront of shaping solutions that matter most to them. Applications for Round 1 funding close on 28 April 2025. Details on Round 2 funding will be announced later this year.
