Vale Professor Robin Warren We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of the most eminent doctors to have worked at Royal Perth Hospital – Nobel Laureate Emeritus Professor Robin Warren AC. Prof Warren and Prof Barry Marshall AC were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2005 for their groundbreaking discovery of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. Prof Warren's inspiring work laid the foundation for many of the innovative practices at RPH, the wider East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS) and beyond. His dedication to linking laboratory research with clinical practice has led to numerous 'world firsts' in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases at RPH. Prof Grant Waterer, Executive Director of Medical Services at EMHS, said Prof Warren was a highly respected pathologist who provided decades of devoted service at RPH. “His identification of Helicobacter pylori was critical to the insights that led to his shared Nobel Prize with Dr Barry Marshall, but beyond that, his work was critical to the healthcare of many tens of thousands of West Australians over his career.” In addition to the Nobel Prize, Prof Warren was honoured with Australia’s highest civilian honour, the Companion of the Order of Australia, in 2007 for his exceptional contributions to medical research. Last week, Minister for Medical Research Stephen Dawson visited RPH to announce funding for the Collaborative Centres Program. The cutting-edge work by CCTWA provided the perfect backdrop for this exciting announcement. East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS) is proud to have established the Collaborative Centre for Advanced Therapies (CCPAT). By leveraging our existing expertise in cell and gene manufacturing at Royal Perth Hospital, Westmead Hospital in New South Wales, the Alfred Hospital in Victoria, and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Queensland, we are poised to advance the development of novel medical therapies. This collaboration will see a diverse range of locally manufactured cell and gene products, driving forward our mission to innovate and excel in medical research and patient care.
