On Wednesday, 4 September, we celebrate both Indigenous Literacy Day and Early Childhood Educators’ Day. This convergence highlights the importance of literacy and early childhood education in shaping young minds and preserving cultural heritage. Indigenous Literacy Day honours First Nations stories, cultures and languages, integral to Australia’s identity. Early Childhood Educators’ Day recognises those guiding our youngest learners. These observances complement each other, as early childhood professionals introduce children to diverse cultures, including Indigenous ones, fostering cultural awareness and inclusivity. Let’s acknowledge the efforts to promote literacy, preserve Indigenous cultures and provide quality early childhood education. Our early childhood educators play a crucial role in building a foundation for lifelong learning and cultural appreciation. Join us in recognising the importance of Indigenous literacy and the contributions of early childhood educators. Together, we can support a future where all children have access to quality education that celebrates Australia’s diverse cultural heritage. ‘In education, we know a lot about what works to improve learning outcomes for students … but what we know less about is the how. So, how we put these practices into practice, so to speak, in schools.’ In a new article in Teacher ACER, AERO’s Senior Manager of Evidence Adoption and Implementation, Kate Griffiths, discusses our new resources on evidence-based implementation in schools. Social and emotional learning involves skills such as children distinguishing their own needs from those of others, learning to effectively identify and manage emotions, and building and maintaining positive relationships with others. You can use AERO’s early childhood learning trajectory to observe children’s progress in social and emotional learning, and to plan the next steps in their learning and development. AERO has developed a deliberate and structured approach to help schools implement evidence-based practices effectively. Our approach acknowledges the unique context of each school while offering a flexible framework for tailored implementation of evidence-based practices. There are 4 components that form part of an evidence-informed approach to implementation: 1. Using a staged approach. 2. Addressing enablers and barriers. 3. Using key implementation strategies. 4. Monitoring implementation outcomes. This approach aims to bridge the gap between research and practice, improving student learning outcomes. While teachers, educators and leaders are increasingly aware of evidence-based teaching practices, the 'how' of effective implementation is just as important as the 'what'. AERO’s structured yet flexible approach to implementation recognises each school's unique context, allowing for tailored implementation of evidence-based practices. Our new suite of resources outline how to embed effective teaching practices, drawing on implementation research and our work with partner schools over the past 18 months. By focusing on deliberate implementation, schools can maximise the impact of evidence-based approaches on student learning outcomes. It's Children's Book Week! (Aug 17-23) Reading isn't just magical—it's science too! This illustration by Jess Racklyeft captures the wonder of reading, but there's also solid research behind the best ways of support children as they learn to read. Understanding the cognitive science behind how children learn to read, and the research on effective instruction, makes it easier for teachers, educators and leaders to align policy and classroom teaching with evidence.
