CSIRO’s Lab22 is partnering with leading universities through the Trailblazer Universities Program to improve manufacturing in Australia. The $45 million partnership brings together specialised equipment and technology to enable researchers and businesses to build complex metal parts quickly and at scale to save production costs. The partnership seeks to advance Australia’s industrial research capability. The Trailblazer Universities Program supports domestic manufacturing in six national priority areas of critical minerals, defence, food, space, renewables and waste recycling. Industry identifies research and development problems and then works with university researchers on commercialising that research under the guidance of business leaders. Did you know that food poisoning is estimated to affect more than 4 million Australians every year? Researchers at The Australian National University are studying a bacterium called ‘Bacillus cereus’, which is responsible for producing toxins that cause food poisoning symptoms. They are hopeful this will lead to the development of new drugs that help restrict the spread of infection and complement existing antibiotics. This research is supported by Phenomics Australia and Therapeutic Innovation Australia and enabled by the department’s NCRIS program. To close out #SafeWorkMonth, we welcomed Dr Anna Cody, Sex Discrimination Commissioner, to join us to discuss Respect@Work. Dr Cody shared with us the new Respect@Work workplace prevention and response model, which is designed to build everybody’s knowledge to ensure we understand our responsibilities and can take action to prevent harassment from occurring in the workplace. Dr Cody answered questions in the room and online about how we can best support people when reporting harassment, the importance of being culturally aware when handling these types of reports, and the best ways to create an environment that is safe, inclusive, and respectful. Recognising the diversity and intersectionality of the people you work with can help inform how you offer support to them when they need it most. Thank you to Anna Cody for joining us.
