The National Anti-Racism Framework is a roadmap for a whole of government approach to eliminate racism in Australia. Although governments must ‘lead’ this work through resourcing and political will, it is truly First Nations and other negatively racialised communities who should be supported to lead anti-racism action for their communities. But the first step is that political will and resourcing. I spent the last 2 days in Canberra meeting with ALP, LNP, Greens and Independent politicians asking for their support of the Framework. I was heartened by the productive and engaged conversations. I hope to continue the conversations and get bi-partisan support to fully fund all 63 recommendations before the next Federal election.

Today’s Oration given by our CEO, Marni Tuala, spoke to the announcement by the newly appointed QLD Premier. The premier reiterated his election pledge to repeal the Path to Treaty Act and instructed the immediate ‘shutdown’ of the QLD Truth Telling and Healing Inquiry. This unprecedented act clearly demonstrates that achieving racial justice and equity for First Nations people is not everyone’s priority. Systemic Racism is pervasive and deeply embedded across all sectors. Until we as country commit to dismantling these systems, there will be no racial justice.
On a day of disappointment with the new Queensland Premier announced the end of the Truth Telling and healing Inquiry, I cannot understate the importance of the release of our report on the Voices of First Nations People in support of a National Anti-Racism Framework. The cessation of the Inquiry is the opposite of what consultations show is needed for First Nations Racial Justice. There can be no peace without justice, and no racial justice without truth. To achieve an equitable Australia, governments must recognise systemic racism and the devastating impacts on First Nations peoples, and take urgent action to address it. That includes: • implementing anti-racism education in schools • cultural safety training for health professionals • reforming the justice system to address biases • ensuring that First Nations voices are central in decision-making. Full report here https://lnkd.in/g_HYCKff Thank you Marni Tuala and Peter Honeyman at First Nations Community Collective for your amazing work in preparing this work.
