Since establishment in 1908, fkaCS has advocated for high quality education for all Victorian children and families.
About us
fka Children's Services (fkaCS) is a not-for-profit organisation with a long history of supporting Early Childhood Education and Care services, dating back to 1908. fkaCS promotes the rights of all children to actively participate in high-quality early childhood education and care that recognises and values diversity and contributes to social cohesion across the community. fkaCS advocates and supports the provision of high quality early childhood education and care including Children’s Cultural and Linguistic Rights through the provision of advocacy, consultancy and resources. fkaCS began as the Free Kindergarten Union (FKU) in 1908. The FKU was at the forefront of the early childhood education movement and had a major role in instigating many significant early childhood initiatives including the establishment of the first Kindergarten Teachers College (now part of Melbourne University), the formation of a national association for early childhood (which evolved to Early Childhood Australia) and were the original trustees for the Lady Gowrie Centre in Victoria in the late 1930s.

ENHANCING RESPECTFUL & CULTURAL EXPERIENCES: Our Niño ELA leadership teams recently visited fka Children's Services' (fkaCS) resource library. fkaCS has been a strong advocate for children’s cultural and linguistic rights and has provided support to education and care services for many years. The morning was spent exploring their extensive range of many cultural books and resources to enhance a respectful and multi-cultural experience to support all the little niños, and to also allow familiar languages so families can enjoy these experiences with their children. Niño ELA recognises the significance of cultivating a culturally rich curriculum that celebrates diversity and having access to libraries like fkaCS enables us to achieve this. We sincerely thank Ashley and the team at fkaCS for hosting us and generously sharing their resources. #NinoELA #ForTheLittleNinos #earlylearning #childcare #kindergarten #parenting #mumtobe #dadlife #childdevelopment #toddlers #nursery #children #learning #earlychildhoodeducation #fkacs

We’ve listened to more than 5,000 Victorians – including families, the early childhood workforce, providers, peak bodies and experts – to inform how we design and implement the next stages of the Best Start, Best Life reforms. Our new consultation report outlines what we’ve heard and what we're doing. The needs of children are at the heart of the reforms – which are delivering quality early learning for Victorian children. Thank you to everyone who participated in the consultation. Whether you attended a consultation session, took part in a forum or filled in a survey, you are helping to make positive change for Victorian children and give them the best start in life.
