Sadiq Khan has been elected as MayorofLondon London for a third term. Supported by the MayorofLondon #LAIN (London Anchor Institutions' Network) is London’s first ever city-wide initiative that commits institutions to work together; using their #procurement, #recruitment and #estate management capacity for social and economic benefit. LAIN brings together London’s major public and private sector institutions so they can find new and better ways to tackle long-standing problems and new threats to the city, like the accelerating climate emergency and cost of living crisis. The idea is that by working together towards shared goals – tackling inequalities, supporting inclusive economic growth and taking action in the face of climate change – LAIN can make a bigger and more positive change than any one organisation would do by working alone. LAIN’s membership spans the public, private, faith-based, education and cultural sectors. Collectively LAIN represents dozens of #anchors across the city; - employing tens of thousands of people, - spending billions of pounds a year, and, - managing millions of square metres of real estate. The potential to make a significant difference to the city is HUGE. And it’s working. Read more about our impact and how we’re changing lives here: https://lnkd.in/eX4vmb2Y We’d like to thank our LAIN members for their commitments and ongoing work. Together, LAIN is creating a fairer, greener, more prosperous city for all Londoners. We’re committed to achieving more, faster and on a bigger scale. THIS is true value based health & care. We need to explore this method & modify it for our contexts
Director of Innovation at Care City CIC | Building new ways of working across health, care and communities
Changing Futures Northumbria have done something so special in Gateshead. Deeply relational working with people who have a tonne of complexity going on in their lives. Shifting from massive public costs to adding real value on the things that matter most to them. Better for people, the team, the place, the economy. They’ve been a huge inspiration to Elspeth Paisley Alice Osborne Matthew Skinner and me in Barking and Dagenham. This is the most comprehensive evidence gathering on a case that has been made so many times. Exponentially better for our public services. Relational, bespoke-by-default approaches that work to a whole person are more effective and more efficient. I know change is hard, but this is real lives we’re talking about. It’s time for a move to something that works for our loved ones. We need to change the ‘safe space’ of public sector leadership from managing expectations and decline in our residents’ lives, to creating spaces where learning and people can flourish. Frankly, we need to be quite a bit braver. In our corner of the world we’ll be openly sharing our own methods, learning, and evidence in North East London. Our work to support people to build relationships is being delivered within the VCSE sector, and is also a test of how well we can shift power in our Borough. You’ll see how we’re doing at Care City and through our brilliant team of CIC partners (see the people above). #liberatingpublicservices

We often work within regeneration contexts in our consultancy work. Frequently people are focusing on buildings and infrastructure in regeneration plans, but we think it's important to talk about cultural regeneration too. People and activity need to be a part of regeneration if it's going to have the impact it should. So it's great to see this article from Arts Council England on cultural regeneration in the West Country. #LetsCreate #CulturalRegeneration #CulturalDevelopment #CulturalConsultancy https://lnkd.in/euvTuDu9

Local governments play a key role in influencing the design of neighbourhoods and have many tools available to activate best practices in designing for social connectedness. Participatory models, deliberative ways of working with community, change making to drive social cohesion outcomes for communities and approaches to strengthening social cohesion have been extensively studied and developed. These practices along with other case studies will be highlighted the upcoming national Strengthening Social Cohesion Conference, 3-5 July 2024, delivered by Western Sydney University with the support of the Department of Home Affairs and the NSW Premier’s Department. Early bird ticket sales will be closing 10 May 2024, however if cost is a barrier there are a limited number of travel subsidies available, and ticket fees may be waived upon request. The conference, held over three days between July 3-5, will bring together representatives from community, government and industry across the nation to discuss all aspects of social cohesion and democratic resilience. It will focus on the practical skills and capabilities that are critical for creating positive impacts within the community, featuring both Australian and international speakers. I encourage anyone who works in this space to attend and participate in this important conversation. https://lnkd.in/gwiAsXWz

One of Northern Ireland's biggest challenges is its high levels of economic inactivity—the highest across all UK regions. ➡️ That's why our first PF Live Northern Ireland workshop explored how cross-sector partnerships can address regional inequalities. Hosted by CIPFA Chief Economist Jeffrey Matsu, our panel focused on reactivating individuals and supporting their participation in the labour market to drive future growth and prosperity. Key insights include; 📍 Deirdre Ward, Director of Work and Wellbeing, Department for Communities, emphasised the role of place-based programmes in helping local businesses employ local citizens. 🤝 Lisa McIlvenna, Deputy Managing Director, Business in the Community Northern Ireland, spoke about fostering openness and collaboration among businesses to develop innovative solutions. 🌐 Joan Ballantine, Professor of Accounting, Ulster University, highlighted the importance of data-driven policies, encouraging engagement between policymakers, academia, and businesses for real change. Collaboration, involvement, and data-driven strategies emerged as key themes crucial to overcoming economic inactivity and ensuring long-term regional growth. #CIPFANI #NorthernIreland #PublicFinance

ICYMI: A whopping 69% of people in four urban areas across the UK have never taken part in a planning consultation. And the reason? They’ve never been asked. At the very end of 2023 we launched our Code of Practice for effective community consultation and engagement in development, planning and design, as a response to these critical findings. 📊 Research findings Community Consultation for Quality of Life (CCQOL) was the UK’s largest research project into community engagement in planning. And it found consultation and engagement practices across the UK to be inconsistent and often inadequate. In fact, every nation in the UK is affected by poor consultation and engagement practices, making the planning process - at times - undemocratic. 👍What's the good news? The good news is that we are equipped with knowledge about how to do consultation and engagement well, and there is great enthusiasm for change. That’s why we launched the Quality of Life Foundation's Code of Practice for community engagement in the planning process. The Code is backed by CCQOL’s extensive research conducted by teams at University of Reading, The University of Edinburgh, Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd and Ulster University. This Code of Practice aims to fill the gap revealed by the research, ensuring that community voices are not only heard but are integral to the planning and design process. 🌟 How to engage: The Code of Practice is currently in its beta phase, and we invite you to join us in testing and shaping the future of community engagement. Find out more about the Code of Practice and how to get involved here: https://lnkd.in/ebZkdhaU Let's build quality of life together. #CommunityEngagement #InclusivePlanning #QualityofLifeFoundation #CommunityConsultation #LocalGovernment #BuiltEnvironment #UKHousing #SpatialPlanning #LocalPlan #NeighbourhoodPlan

Public consultations are always rewarding, and it is even more rewarding when that research can serve many purposes. Here you'll see the Borough of King's Lynn & West Norfolk is using evidence from a range of consultations, including data collated from our work on the Culture & Heritage Strategy to inform this study for the Long Term Plan for Towns... #CulturalConsultancy #CreativeConsultations #CultureStrategyDevelopment https://lnkd.in/eJMdHedh

𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐀𝐈𝐃𝐎𝐂 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝟏 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 ❤️🖤💛💙💚🤍 Our CEO Deb Barwick and some of our team attended a NAIDOC event on the M1 motorway extension - Blackhill to Tomago bypass, a Transport for NSW project. The event was organised by Transport for NSW’s Aboriginal Participation Officer - Region North, Laz Brown, and the Project’s Workforce Development & Participation Lead, Shannon Toms. The event provided an opportunity to promote NAIDOC and this year’s theme to the project’s workforce and lead stakeholders John Holland, Gamuda Australia, and Daracon Group as a sub-contractor. To celebrate NAIDOC this year, Laz and Shannon chose to raise greater awareness of the NSW Government's Aboriginal Procurement Policy (APP) and the project’s commitment to maximising Aboriginal business engagement and employment through its delivery. Deb spoke about the Policy’s purpose and objectives to create an environment of inclusion for Aboriginal people and communities through the government’s large spend on goods and services in NSW. Specifically, the policy requires the engagement of Aboriginal businesses and the employment of Aboriginal people through the government’s direct purchasing and through its contracts delivered by third parties. Major infrastructure and construction projects like the M1 Motorway can potentially offer enormous opportunities to achieve policy outcomes. Deb said, “The key, however, is in early engagement with the Chamber to reach an understanding of the diversity and capacity of the suppliers in the region. Too often, we see projects only engaging 1 or 2 businesses throughout the life of the project when there is a much bigger opportunity. Early engagement allows for an increase in the number of local businesses supplying on a project, which in turn also supports local employment.” It was great to share the floor with Uncle Victor Perry from Yunaga Civil and Earth (YCE) and Joel Singles from The Supplies Mob, both proud NSWICC Assured Members. #NAIDOCWeek #AboriginalParticipation #NSWICC #M1MotorwayProject #IndigenousBusiness #CommunityEngagement #TransportForNSW #APP #Inclusion #Diversity #LocalEmployment #InfrastructureProjects #nswiccparter #nswiccassured #nswiccmember

“If we want a less divided society, we must consider how to design the public realm to ‘cue’ our perceptions of a place, and encourage connection.” - Bridget Marquis, Reimagining the Civic Commons While the histories of disconnection in Belfast and the U.S. are different, the two share an urgent need to reknit communities. From the U.S. Surgeon General to U.S. Senator Chris Murphy and Utah Governor Spencer Cox, leaders across the country are recognizing the epidemic of loneliness is a major national challenge with local roots. In both places, a vicious cycle is at work. A lack of robust social infrastructure reinforces segregation and social isolation, which then encourages hunkering down, fear of “the other” and political extremism. What follows is a general distrust of government and a lack of willingness to invest together, leading to continued disinvestment in social infrastructure. Yet in Belfast, I learned a hopeful truth: the cycle of disinvestment and disconnection can be broken with purposeful attention and catalytic investment in a public realm designed to connect people to each other. In many countries, in many ways, people are driven apart — we as practitioners have the opportunity to reconnect them, through the creation of joyous shared places that are welcome to all. https://lnkd.in/e2YJF-fT Gehl - Making Cities for People RWJF Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Neil Galway Queen's University Belfast #socialinfrastructure #civicinfrastructure #loneliness #connection #publicspace
