As the extent of the recent flooding in western QLD becomes clearer and previously inundated areas in Far North QLD face more rainfall, we're expanding our fundraising appeal to support all communities impacted by recent disasters - including those in northwest WA affected by Cyclone Dianne. For the small and very remote communities impacted, the long-term effects can be catastrophic, yet they are often less visible and, therefore, less supported. Many will experience stock and property losses, isolation, economic disruption, increased pressure on support services, and there will be lasting effects on mental health and community prosperity. When emergency relief funds have been exhausted, we’ll be there to provide medium to long-term recovery for these communities in the coming years. Disasters can leave lasting impacts, but we know that communities have the power to rebuild stronger than ever. After Cyclone Jasper, creative activities played a vital role in supporting the wellbeing of displaced residents in Far North Queensland. Regional Development Australia Tropical North received a $13,610 Rebuilding Futures grant on behalf of Regional Arts Services Network Tropical North (RASNTN) to deliver the Creative Recovery Network training program in Cairns. The program equipped arts officers and community leaders with the skills to lead a structured creative recovery strategy. Participants gained training in cultural wellbeing indicators, national disaster recovery principles and trauma-informed practices, ensuring communities are better prepared for future challenges. FRRR is currently seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified people from remote, rural and regional Australia to sit on one of three bodies that advise the FRRR Board. 🌱 The roles are: - In a Good Place Program Advisory Committee Members - Community Led Climate Solutions Program Advisory Committee Members - Outback Advisory Board Members Successful applicants for the two Program Advisory Committees will help us ensure we are directing grants where they are needed most, while members of the Outback Advisory Board will provide input more broadly on issues and opportunities in remote and outback Australia. Great news! 🗞️ Two Bay & Basin not-for-profits are sharing $78,000 in grants for fantastic community initiatives. $30,000 will support Bay & Basin Community Resources to engage a project officer to coordinate and further develop the Ls & Ps Program, a young-driver education program. The second grant will help deliver the Blak Markets in Huskisson on April 20. The event is supported by First Hand Solutions Aboriginal Corporation and Djiriba Waagura Pty Ltd and will employ a local trainee, as well as engage local cultural services for the market, and support its promotion. The funding is through FRRR’s Investing in Rural Community Futures (IRCF) program, which is supported by Bendigo Bank’s Community Enterprise Foundation. Enhanced wellbeing for seniors on Christmas Island!🙌🎉 Christmas Island’s remote location and ageing population have led to increased isolation for many seniors. The Shire of Christmas Island partnered with Indian Ocean Territories Health Services to provide essential programs like Stay on Your Feet and to fund respite sessions, improving the emotional, physical and cognitive health of participants. Thanks to an $8,979 Strengthening Rural Communities Rebuilding Regional Communities grant funded by the Australian Government, these programs have been enhanced with new equipment, arts and crafts, and an arcade table. With record river heights being reported in in many parts of western and central western Queensland, our thoughts are with all the local volunteers and community groups in those areas. This article from the ABC provides a snapshot of the impact so far. https://lnkd.in/g7DyV3na While it's been dry, no one wanted that much rain! From what we are already hearing, there could be extensive stock losses and damage to infrastructure, as well as significant disruptions to supply chains, with impacts too on local and national economies. In October 2022, devastating flash floods inundated nearly 2,000 Rochester homes and businesses, leaving only three houses untouched. Nine months later, families were still displaced, children were bussed to Bendigo for school, and trade shortages left many in makeshift housing - worsening stress, especially for vulnerable youth. With the support of a $20,000 Rebuilding Futures grant, funded by Suncorp Group, Boys to the Bush (BttB) delivered vital programs, like Building Up Rochester Boys camp, to improve youth mental health in flood-affected Rochester. The camp gave young participants a much-needed escape, where they learned bush skills, campfire cooking, fishing and cultural traditions with Indigenous leaders. These experiences built resilience, connection and self-confidence, benefiting both the boys and their families. This is just one great example of how a Rebuilding Futures grant can support recovery projects in communities impacted by disasters and extreme weather events that occurred between 2019 and 2024. Stream 1 of the Rebuilding Futures program is still open and accepting applications.
