🏗️ Inside the Hive: World’s Most Advanced Seismic Timber Building! 💥 Introducing "the Hive," North America’s largest timber-braced building, approaches its final top-out. This 10-storey marvel is set to become one of the most significant advancements in seismic-resistant timber construction. 🔍 Why This Matters: 1️⃣ Engineering Excellence: Designed by Fast + Epp, the Hive features an all-timber system utilising glue-laminated timber beams, columns, and cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels. With 105 seismic dampers integrated into the structure, this building is poised to redefine safety standards in seismic design and construction. 2️⃣ Innovative Construction: The Hive employs a groundbreaking lateral system utilising perforated plate technology, which allows energy to dissipate within the building's frame. This innovative approach enhances earthquake resilience and provides valuable data for future tall wood projects. 3️⃣ Pioneering Fire Safety: The Hive incorporates a “fire-safe tall wood design,” using specially engineered timber members that can withstand intense flames. This design allows the outer layer of wood to char, creating a protective barrier for the building's structural integrity. 🍁 As part of British Columbia’s Mass Timber Demonstration Programme, this project exemplifies the province's commitment to pushing the boundaries of timber construction. Robert Jackson from Fast + Epp highlights the importance of innovation in seismic design and integrated service distribution, which has led to a striking architectural expression while maintaining functionality. ⏰ With the Hive nearing completion, attention is drawn to its potential impact on the future of mass timber construction. As Robert Jackson prepares to share insights at Timber Construct, the global timber community eagerly anticipates the lessons that can be learned from this pioneering project. 🔗 For an in-depth look at the Hive and its significance in the world of timber construction, visit Wood Central: https://lnkd.in/gvgfRMWK) 🗣️ #questionforgroup: What innovations in timber construction do you believe will shape the future of sustainable building practices? As global demand for paper declines and production costs rise, many pulp mills are facing shutdowns. So, how can companies adapt and thrive in this challenging environment? The answer is diversification. Leading forest companies in Sweden, Germany, and Finland are pioneering integrated industrial ecosystems. These companies combine pulp mills with paper mills, sawmills, timber plants, and even chemical and biofuel facilities. This holistic approach creates a network of synergies, ensuring that every bit of raw material—be it chips, bark, or sawdust—is utilised effectively. By adopting similar strategies, Foresta not only maximises revenue opportunities but also mitigates risks compared to traditional business models. Embracing this innovative approach is key to navigating the evolving economic and environmental landscape. 🚨 Breaking News: Milwaukee to Build 50-Storey Timber Tower? 🌐 The tallest mass timber building could soon rise over a snow pile in Milwaukee! The City of Milwaukee has selected The Neutral Project—developers of The Edison, a 32-storey hybrid building—to develop an even more impressive 50-storey timber skyscraper. This project is part of a $700 million activation of the Marcus Performing Art Center garage snow pile. 🔍 Why This Matters: 1️⃣ Record-Breaking Design: Designed by MGA | Michael Green Architecture, the project aims to be the tallest mass timber building in the world and the tallest building in Wisconsin. 2️⃣ Sustainable Development: Located near The Edison—which uses 100,000 cubic feet of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels and glulam beams over a post-tensioned concrete base—the new building will include up to 750 residential units, 90,000 square feet of office space, 40,000 square feet of retail, 300 hotel rooms, and public plazas. 3️⃣ Urban Growth: Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson supports the project to grow the city’s population to one million. The development represents a forward-thinking Milwaukee that is open to outside investment and innovative ideas. 🪵 According to Kevin Naranjo, National Program Manager for Mass Timber at the US Forest Service Wood Innovations Program, the demand for timber buildings will surge 25-fold over the next 50 years. Mass timber buildings are lighter, more sustainable, and faster to construct than conventional steel and concrete systems. 🔗 Learn more about the surge in mass timber construction and Milwaukee’s ambitious new project: https://lnkd.in/gGmT2wgu 🗣️ #questionforgroup: What are the key benefits and challenges of constructing high-rise buildings using mass timber?
