About us

Guardian Exercise Rehabilitation was established in 2000 by Exercise Physiologist, John McDonald, who had a vision of ensuring that structured physical activity was a key foundation of rehabilitation at the earliest time in the recovery journey for as many individuals as possible. Over the years the company has evolved to become an industry leader in clinically-guided, best-practice rehabilitation interventions for people afflicted with injury or illness under a compensable-injury policy, principally across Workers’ Compensation, Life Insurance/Income Protection and Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) / Compulsory Third Party (CTP) schemes. With an ever increasing national footprint, we currently employ over 70 Allied Health Clinicians across Australia and pride ourselves on delivering the utmost standard of care to all of our clients. Our vibrant team of professionals endeavour to make a difference to people’s lives by empowering them through high-quality rehabilitation programs.

  • Meet Joe McLoughlin, Thomas Warner, and Jun Oh from our Brisbane team. They were recently on the receiving end of some glowing feedback from a student they assisted during his placement - so on this Feel Good Friday, we've cherry picked the very best of what he said. 🍒 🌟 "A comment made by a Case manager was that Joe went 'above and beyond' in his role as a physiotherapist when he didn't need to, I think this speaks volumes about Joe's character." 🌟 "Tom valued his evidence-based approach and has taught me incredible skills that I will not forget and that will also improve me as a health worker." 🌟 "Jun really felt like an older brother I never had, and was a great support within my time at Guardian. This level of support and care was also shown in his skills as a clinician where he taught me a lot about the level of empathy required to really understand a client, thus give them the best holistic and client-centred approach within his power." QLD Area Manager, Matthew Worland, says "the student said that he has never seen a business where every single team member was consistently showing up and going the extra mile. To be honest, I left the conversation feeling exceptionally proud of the superstar team we have in Queensland!" Go team 👏

  • We are excitedly preparing for our Annual Staff Awards in December! 🏆🥇 Our IT guru, Lakshan, was the well-deserving winner of the 'Helping Hero Award' at last year's inaugural ceremony. One year on, here's what he has to say about his big win... "I find my role as an IT Support Tech incredibly rewarding, especially because I get to help everyone with their IT issues and make their work day smoother. There's something really fulfilling about knowing that I can solve problems, keep things running smoothly, and contribute to teams’ success in a meaningful way. When I won the Helping Hero award last year, it meant a lot to me because it was a recognition of the effort I put into making sure that everyone feels supported. It was also a reflection of the kindness and encouragement I receive from my family here. Working alongside such a supportive and collaborative team makes every challenge easier to tackle, and I feel fortunate to be part of an environment where we all help each other succeed." Lakshan, you're a legend! Who will win this year's Helping Hero award, we wonder...? 🧐 #awards #staffrecognition

In support of Mental Health Month, we're revisiting a case study that highlights just some of the benefits of mindful exercise for PTSD and Anxiety. Our client - a Fire and Rescue officer who ceased work following a psychological injury – had completely disengaged from work, social and family pursuits, resulting in heightened isolation. This in turn led to agoraphobia (fear of leaving environments or situations considered to be safe), low appetite, and a general low mood, as well as a significantly elevated resting heart rate due to anxiety. By the end of her 26-week program with us, she was attending the gym in excess of three times a week and had re-engaged in formerly treasured hobbies: beach swims and dog walks! The role of exercise as a 'step zero' intervention in mental health management and treatment cannot be underestimated. • Today is World Mental Health Day 🌏 In fact, October is all about mental health awareness: Western Australia is currently mid-way through Mental Health Week, and New South Wales devotes an entire month to the cause. One sadly pervasive aspect of mental illness is the stigma that surrounds it: a stigma that is often borne of profound misunderstanding. With the benefits of exercise for mental health being robustly documented in both research and practice, one surprising finding has been around this very stigma – with a 2023 study finding that exercise was more 'socially acceptable' than some other treatments, leading to better mental health outcomes for those who engaged in physical activity. As we strive to break down barriers and cultivate a deeper understanding of the science behind physical activity and mental health, our hope is for the stigma around ill mental health to end...and for every individual to find joy in exercise. • Today marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month – a National Breast Cancer Foundation initiative to highlight why research in this space is so critical. Breast cancer is currently the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia – with nine people per day tragically losing their lives to the disease. As our Health Info sheet on exercise for breast cancer outlines, ongoing evidence continues to strongly identify the beneficial impact exercise can have on both the physiological and psychological aspects of cancer recovery. Flick through the slides for our expert tips and guidelines, and make sure to check in throughout October as we support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This World Suicide Prevention Day, our Volunteer Crisis Supporters were lucky enough to meet CBH Group Growers, Vanessa and Noel, who offered their time to share their insights into what it’s like to be a farmer in regional Western Australia. Thank you to Vanessa and Noel for dedicating their time and willingness to share their experiences in this valuable session, and to CBH for making it happen. • In honour of World Heart Day yesterday, we’re sharing a success story of a 38-year-old male plumber who faced left ventricular heart failure following a viral infection. Our exercise rehabilitation program, which included 12 supervised gym and telehealth reviews over six months, focused on cardiovascular and resistance-based exercises. This approach not only mimicked his pre-disability duties but also supported his overall recovery. By the end of the program, he had lost over 45kg, completed cardiac rehab, and returned to work with significant improvements in physical and mental health. Join us in supporting heart health and learn more about our programs at Guardian Exercise Rehabilitation. Read the full case study here:  #WorldHeartDay #HeartHealth #exercisephysiology #casestudy
