Fantastic insights and problem solving about #homelessness and #naturaldisasters at yesterday's National Symposium hosted by Homelessness Australia Australian Red Cross and HowWeSurvive (UNSW Built Environment Research), with support from Community Housing Industry Association and National Shelter. We came many steps closer to solving the challenges in providing emergency responses that are inclusive of people experiencing homelessness, and which resolve homelessness resulting from disasters. With presentations from Michelle Villeneuve Sonia Chudiak Shanaka Perera and John Fien. You can explore the issues discussed in this issues paper https://lnkd.in/dSpFYvgw Watch this space for a workshop report capturing key insights and next steps. Our Child Homelessness Snapshot 2024 highlights how lack of access to housing, income support that is too low, and inadequate funding of homelessness services is resulting in homeless children and families being unable to escape homelessness. This #HW2024 we need action on social housing investment and increased income support, and significant new investment in homelessness services to meet demand. As the peak body of the homelessness sector Homelessness Australia works every day to end homelessness. We advocate for the policy changes needed to reduce the number of people becoming homeless, and for the resources the sector needs to respond effectively to people who lose their homes. In the past year, with no Government funding and only one staff member, Homelessness Australia: - stopped $70 million planned cuts of annual Federal homelessness funding - provided a 3 day Housing First masterclass to 24 homelessness practitioners - produced three papers, conducted 11 consultations involving 985 people, and participated in 29 meetings with Government officials or MPs to inform the Government's 10-year National Housing and Homelessness Plan - coordinated Homelessness Week - created149 media stories about homelessness - provided evidence or submissions to 11 government inquiries or processes - had 56 meetings with MPs - wrote 4 major reports on homelessness - hosted 4 webinars, and - sent 22 e-bulletins to our members and and other supporters. With peak body funding we could do much more and this work could be sustainable over the long term.
