Housing Australia joined BHC Creating Liveable Communities (BHC), and key project partners involved in bringing a new housing project in Queensland to life, on site for a sod turn event. The Queensland Minister for Housing and Public Works, Sam O'Connor MP, and BHC Chair Eloise Atkinson also attended to mark this critical milestone. This Southport project will provide 158 social and affordable homes, with the social housing units to provide housing for single women with children, young people, First Nations people, and over 55’s; and the affordable units to prioritise providing housing for key workers. This development forms part of a broader $300m funding project with BHC through the Housing Australia’s AHBA and NHIF SAH programs, to support delivery of up to 604 new homes across South-East Queensland. Housing Australia has today launched the $1 billion National Housing Infrastructure Facility Crisis and Transitional Housing (NHIF CT) program by releasing the Program Guidelines. Through the NHIF CT, Housing Australia will provide grants and loans to support the delivery of new crisis and transitional housing projects for vulnerable Australians, including women and children experiencing family and domestic violence, and youth at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness. The launch of the Program Guidelines and pre-engagement phase ensures eligible applicants are well-informed and prepared ahead of the Expressions of Interest opening in mid-April 2025. It’s a common misconception that properties purchased under the Home Guarantee Scheme can be converted into an investment property after just one year of it being owner-occupied. This is incorrect. The Home Guarantee Scheme has been established to ensure more Australians have access to safe and secure housing by supporting them to purchase a home sooner. Participants must live in the property for as long as their home loan is covered by the Guarantee and are monitored by Participating Lenders to ensure compliance with the program’s requirements. Housing Australia is proud to be partnering with Housing Trust, and looks forward to continuing to work closely with the community housing sector to deliver more homes under the Housing Australia Future Fund Facility and National Housing Accord Facility.
Today marks a significant milestone with the official opening of another Housing Trust project The Bower in Dapto - our newest project featuring nine brand new 1 and 2 bedroom townhouses specifically designed for women-led households. We were thrilled to celebrate this special occasion with our new tenants, as well as our invaluable supporters: Wollongong City Council, Federal Member for Whitlam Stephen Jones, and NSW Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson MP. Their ongoing support has been crucial in bringing this project to life. A heartfelt thank you to Wollongong City Lord Mayor Tania Brown, whose commitment to the project has been unwavering since its inception. A huge thank you to everyone involved, and to those who joined us for morning tea and a tree planting ceremony to commemorate these wonderful new homes and the families who will live in them. To elevate the celebration, I’m delighted to share that two of the first 12 projects announced today as being funded by the Housing Australia Future Fund Facility (HAFFF), administered by Housing Australia include homes in NorthSea and The Bower. Both will benefit from this groundbreaking initiative led by the Federal Government to increase the availability of affordable housing nationwide.
