It’s a game of millimetres during a machine refurbishment – in this case, even less! 📏 Our crews have been hard at work inside Gordon Power Station for the number 2 machine outage recently conducting an operation to remove the alternator shaft from the hub with a tolerance of less than 0.1 of a millimetre. Teams working alongside specialist contractors successfully heated the hub to 100 degrees using specifically designed heating boxes – while simultaneously using dry ice to reduce heat transferred into the shaft. This heat expanded the hub just enough to be lifted from the shaft using a hydraulic lifting platform with the smallest of margins. 🏗️ Crews can now conduct a detailed inspection on the shaft to ensure it remains in working order to produce renewable energy for years to come! Do you want to join our teams in managing our major refurbishment projects? Check out our current vacancies below 👇 https://lnkd.in/d7Q9mXun

Hear from one of our Girls in Power students and Gina from Generation Hydro about last month's Girls in Power program ⚡ In recent years, only 15% of the STEM workforce in Tasmania is female and fewer than 40% of STEM enrolments at university are women. So we know how important it is for young people to understand how awesome a career in STEM could be! Read more about what went on from the couple days below! 👉 https://lnkd.in/ge958Zzb

We would like to congratulate Erin van Maanen, our incoming Acting CEO! 👏   Erin has stepped into the role of Acting CEO from 4 October, most recently leading our Strategy function as Executive General Manager Strategy, following the retirement of outgoing CEO Ian Brooksbank. Erin’s career begun two decades ago in wind development, working on some of Australia’s earliest large scale wind farms and projects internationally. Since starting with Hydro Tasmania in 2009, Erin has built deep experience and knowledge of the Australian energy sector across leadership roles in strategy, wholesale energy, finance and compliance.   “The Executive Leadership team and I will take the baton from Ian and continue to deliver on our strategy with a strong focus on safety, culture and performance. I am looking forward to contributing further to this amazing organisation and supporting our people to continue the great work underway across Hydro Tasmania, Entura and Momentum Energy,” says Erin.   Congratulations once again, Erin!

Today we farewell our Chief Executive Officer Ian Brooksbank!   Joining us in 2019 as Chief Financial Officer, Ian acted in the role of CEO from 2021 and was appointed to the position in July 2022. Throughout these years, Ian set a clear strategic path for our organisation, driving our major projects, delivering strong financial results and championing a focus on culture and leadership.   Under Ian's guidance, we have also achieved the lowest ever rate of injuries. "I cannot think of a single thing more important than ensuring people can go home safely at the end of a shift, and we've worked hard to embed a strong safety culture," said Ian.   As Ian enters semi-retirement, we thank him for his commitment to our organisation, and his skilled and compassionate leadership.   "I want to say a big thank you to all of those who so warmly welcomed me as CEO and allowed me to be who I am in the role. The business is in safe hands with Erin van Maanen as Acting CEO, supported by a very capable executive team. I will be watching Hydro Tasmania’s success with keen interest (from a golf course)," says Ian.   Read more from Ian here: https://lnkd.in/gshBbpMA

    Principal

Today is my final day as CEO of Hydro Tasmania. Leading this complex organisation and working with the incredible people across the business has been a privilege.   Over the course of my career, I spent many years overseeing some of the country’s biggest coal and gas-fired power stations. My transition to being at the helm of Australia’s largest generator of renewable energy mirrored the national transition away from fossil fuels and towards renewables.   Thank you to everyone at Hydro Tasmania, Momentum Energy and Entura who are making a difference each day, and I congratulate Erin van Maanen for stepping into the role of Acting CEO. The last three years have been the best of my career, and I look forward to watching with keen interest as Tasmania continues to harness its incredible natural advantages.   Read my full opinion piece that was published in The Mercury newspaper below.
