Infrastructure Australia welcomes the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King’s appointment of our three inaugural Commissioners. Minister King has named Tim Reardon as our new Chief Commissioner, and Clare Gardiner-Barnes and Dr Gillian Miles as our two Commissioners. Mr Reardon has overseen one of the nation’s largest infrastructure pipelines as the former Secretary of Transport for NSW, before going on to lead the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet. Ms Gardiner-Barnes brings extensive experience from across the public sector, having held senior roles across NSW, Queensland and the NT, while Dr Miles brings more than 30 years of experience working across government at a national, state and local level, including as the Chief Executive Officer and Commissioner of the National Transport Commission. Under their leadership, the agency is well-placed to deliver on its strengthened mandate as the Australian Government’s expert independent infrastructure advisor, committed to the economic, environmental and social prosperity of all Australians. We extend our thanks to Gabrielle Trainor AO for her leadership and support over the years, including as a Director and interim Chair of the former IA Board and interim Chief Commissioner. Our research shows steel imports have grown 20 per cent over the past two years compared with the previous two decades.   As our Chief Executive Adam Copp told the Australian Steel Institute (ASI)’s 2024 Australian Steel Convention, there are opportunities for the local steel industry to be more involved in the delivery of major projects.   One way the Australian Government could support this is by undertaking an analysis of domestic steel production and fabrication capacity.   This analysis could inform governments and those delivering major projects on the actual availability and capacity of the sector.   “With the data collected through this analysis, governments can use policy levers to encourage greater use of the local steel industry,” Adam said.   “An example here could be leveraging the procurement process to ensure local businesses are considered in the delivery of certain project types. Or at least making sure the local sector is considered as a first option.”    To read more about the policy levers governments can use to encourage greater use of the local steel industry, you can read Adam’s speech here https://lnkd.in/g68xpgXE and the 2023 Infrastructure Market Capacity report here https://lnkd.in/gtqPmhZz

Like all workplaces, we rely on technology to operate efficiently and securely.     Thanks to professionals like our Associate Director – Technology, Maurice Leggio, we have the cutting-edge tools and systems to do just that.    Maurice was initially drawn to Infrastructure Australia by our supportive culture and the chance to work alongside a team of dedicated professionals.     Since joining, he has found a lot of enjoyment working across a number of projects.    "Working with new technology and constantly learning within this ever-evolving landscape is what motivates me, and I’m excited to face these challenges at IA. The innovative environment here, which prioritises continuous improvement and upskilling, truly empowers me to excel.     I’ve also had the opportunity to lay the groundwork for a business intelligence tool for our Project Advisory & Evaluation team, to help them structure and analyse data effectively, uncover insights, and present information in visual formats to provide data-driven advice to the Australian Government.    All of these projects and collaborating with the team at Infrastructure Australia has been incredibly rewarding."    #MeetTheTeam #Infrastructure #Collaboration #Innovation

Our Chief Executive, Adam Copp, recently joined a panel discussion on ‘fast tracking our journey to Net Zero’ at the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) Sustainability Leaders’ Summit in Melbourne.    During the discussion, Adam highlighted that strong leadership and collaboration between government and industry is integral to achieving Net Zero in Australia. He added that there is a strong appetite to collaborate, and it is seeing a lot of good work happening.    In saying this, Adam referenced the leadership role Infrastructure Australia is playing and how it is collaborating to deliver key pieces of research, including our recently launched Embodied Carbon Projects for Australian Infrastructure and Buildings report. You can read a copy of this report by heading to our website https://lnkd.in/gjpdinu8     #Industry #Transport #Sustainability #Collaboration #Decarbonisation #NetZero
