Making NSW a better place to live, work and visit.

About us

We’re a New South Wales government organisation leading the group of transport agencies and divisions that keep NSW moving. With over 25,000 people working right across NSW, we drive the continual development of safe, integrated and efficient transport systems such as road, rail and maritime networks. We’re committed to delivering better transport for the future of NSW, shaping our cities, centres and communities for generations to come. Right now, we’re delivering an ambitious and once-in-a-generation $72.2 billion program of public infrastructure works – the largest transport infrastructure program in Australia’s history. That means more job opportunities than ever before in metropolitan and regional areas right across the state – and your chance to make a lasting impact that will benefit generations to come. If you think Transport for NSW is home only to engineers, tradies and mechanics, think again. We've got roles you may not expect to see at Transport – from drone operators to graphic designers, Crash Lab technicians to boating safety officers, bridge engineers to demand planners, and all kinds of experts in between. In an organisation that’s as large, diverse and dynamic as Transport for NSW, there are thousands of opportunities. But it’s not just about what we do – it’s the way that we do it. We’re taking a new approach to the way we work. We’re embracing new technology and new ways of working. We’re building an open work culture where our people from a diverse range of backgrounds can thrive and continue to innovate. The road ahead is full of possibility and there’s plenty of work to do. We need great people to help us get it done.

  • Today, the Sydney Harbour Bridge turns 93🎉🌉🎈 Our iconic coat hanger opened on Saturday, March 19, 1932, with over a million people crossing the bridge in the first 24 hours on foot, by tram, or by train. Today, our bridge moves around 160,000 vehicles, 480 trains, 2000 cyclists, and 5,000 pedestrians each day. Some sections of the 500 metre-long, 30,000 tonne arch were last painted in the 1990s and around 150,000 square metres (nearly a third of the bridge) of hard-to-reach steel are due for a fresh lick of paint before the centenary milestone. 12 new painters are being employed to help with the massive maintenance blitz, using around 175,000 litres of paint to keep the bridge in top condition for decades to come. Happy birthday to a Sydney icon! #Sydney #SydneyHarbourBridge #Infrastructure #TransportForNSW

  • No one should have to think twice about their safety when moving through public spaces or on public transport. The revised Women’s Safety Charter for the Public Domain - Places and Transport is a collaborative initiative bringing government agencies, industry, and advocates together to take action to improve women’s safety. The Charter is led by Transport for NSW in partnership with the NSW Women’s Safety Commissioner and the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure. By working together, we can embed safety into the planning, design and delivery of our public spaces and transport network. • International Women’s Day was on Saturday, March 8. We caught up with Sydney Trains Signal Electrical Apprentice Bre Macpherson-Rice and Telecommunications Apprentice Amber Johnstone to hear how we can honour this year's theme, 'Accelerate Action' for gender equality. By challenging gender biases, uplifting each other, and being inclusive, we can create a more equal future for women, girls, and gender-diverse people. #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2025 #Inclusion #Diversity #Equality

  • As Tropical Cyclone Alfred approaches northern NSW, our frontline teams have mobilised to plan, prepare, and respond. The Category Two system brings a serious threat of destructive winds, intense rainfall, flooding, and storm surges. Keep up to date with all road closures at livetraffic.com. Thank you to every team member contributing to this critical response, and all those at the heart of our efforts to keep communities safe. A coordination hub has been established at NSW Maritime North Incident Control Centre (NICC) in Coffs Harbour, leading the operational response, along with: 🚧 On the ground: • 150+ staff on rotation, including regional operations, maintenance and delivery crews, emergency management, and Transport Management Centre (TMC) teams. • 60+ light vehicles, 40 heavy vehicles, and TMC drone pilots ready to assist recovery. • Northern Road Maintenance and Resilience crews in the region, with additional road maintenance teams statewide ready to assist in the coming days. 🚤 Maritime response: • Local and Sydney-based Maritime teams deployed, including eight Boating Safety Officers and a State Incident Controller. • 18-vessel fleet positioned at key locations, with additional vessels and officers arriving before landfall. • Environmental Services crews prepared to assist with post-cyclone clean-up. 🤝 Behind the scenes: • Teams from the State Marine Incident Coordination Centre at Rozelle, TMC, the Transport Emergency and Crisis Coordination Hub at Macquarie Park and Transport representatives at the State Emergency Coordination Centre, are supporting operations. • Communications teams in the TMC are proactively supporting Local Government Areas and councils to ensure that road closures are reflected in real-time. ⚠️ Key information: We are doing a lot in the background and storm affected areas to support communities, but there are lots of things you can do to make sure you are as prepared as possible. • Avoid all non-essential travel in areas impacted by Tropical Cyclone Alfred. • If it’s flooded, forget it. Ensure you check Live Traffic NSW for the most up-to-date information on road closures and if you come across a flooded road, STOP and find an alternative route. • For up-to-date information, including where to find an evacuation centre, visit the NSW SES website: www.ses.nsw.gov.au. • On the weekend, Transport for NSW once again proudly took part in the 47th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade. For the past fifteen years, Transport has been part of the world's largest night‐time Pride Parade, showcasing our ongoing commitment to diversity, inclusion and equality. 🏳️🌈 This year, 80 of our colleagues from across various divisions and agencies came together to represent Transport in the Parade. Decked out in glitter and all the colours of the rainbow the team proudly wore the NSW Government’s iconic Rainbow Waratah, creating a vibrant symbol of unity. The Parade was not only a dazzling spectacle but also a powerful celebration of pride, resilience, and creative self-expression. It perfectly captured the vibrant spirit of the event and served as a reminder that everyone is free to be fabulous. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 #SydneyMardiGras #MardiGras2025 #FreeToBe #LGBTQIA #Inclusion #Diversity

  • Over the past year Transport has embarked on a project to preserve a unique collection of aerial survey films commissioned by the Roads and Traffic Authority of New South Wales (RTA) and its predecessor, the Department of Main Roads (DMR). This collection spans nearly 70 years, containing over 900 original film negatives on nitrate, acetate, and polyester bases, dating from 1937 to 2006. Aerial surveys—high-altitude images capturing detailed views of landscapes, roads, and other features—have played a critical role in shaping Transport’s infrastructure planning. While early surveys relied on methods such as Pigeon Photography (miniature cameras mounted on pigeons), or in this collection’s case, captured by planes - advancements in technology have brought us to the use of drones today. Under the State Records Act 1998, we are committed to managing and preserving significant records in all formats. But beyond compliance, this collection offers immense historical value, documenting the evolving landscape and infrastructure development across NSW. Check out the video below to see how our team of specialists is safeguarding this visual record, preserving an enduring legacy of our State's growth. #TransportforNSW #AerialSurvey #RecordManagement #Digitisation #Technology

  • Thanks to a special delivery from the Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway Ramp project, Kofi the tree kangaroo and many other species at WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo are reaping the rewards of sustainable practices. Branches and leaves removed as part of the project have been repurposed as food and shelter for the zoo’s animals, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability. At Transport, we’ve worked hard to minimise the removal of trees and vegetation, ensuring all alternatives to tree removal were thoroughly explored. In line with Transport’s Tree Replacement Plan, small trees will be replaced with two new plantings, medium trees with four, and large trees with eight, all within the Local Government Area and in collaboration with North Sydney Council to maintain thriving green spaces. Work on the $38.9 million Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway Ramp project is underway. Once complete, this 170-metre-long, 3-metre-wide ramp will connect to the Sydney Harbour Bridge cycleway making one of Australia’s most iconic bike routes more accessible for all ages and abilities. By repurposing materials, reducing waste, and replanting with purpose, we’re ensuring progress and sustainability go hand in hand. These small steps make a big difference in creating a harmonious balance between progress and preservation. 🌿♻️ #Sustainability #TransportforNSW #ActiveTransport

  • A significant achievement has been recognised for the M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace (M12RT) project with the road design achieving a 4-star or better rating for vehicle occupants. This is the first recognition for a Transport for NSW major infrastructure project by the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) organisation that accredits the international safety star rating system. Star ratings are assigned by assessing various factors such as road design, speed limits and the presence of safety barriers, with higher star ratings resulting in fewer fatalities and serious injuries. Set to open in 2028, the M12RT project features 15 km of dual carriageway, four interchanges and 11 bridges - including a 2.6 km viaduct. The $2.1 billion package (M12RT and Hexham Straight Widening projects) will provide a crucial Sydney-Brisbane motorway link and reduce congestion by removing up to 25,000 vehicles daily from the existing road network, boosting regional connectivity, road safety, and economic growth.
