  • Congrats to Professor Gary Lee and colleagues for receiving a $1.2M grant through the WA Government's new Collaborative Centres Program. This funding will help start the Collaborative Centre for Innovative Pleural Research at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Pleural effusion affects 23M people worldwide, making it hard to breathe. Professor Lee's team has developed the use of special indwelling pleural catheters (IPC) to help cancer patients manage this condition at home, improving their quality of life. The new centre will use this method to help more people with pleural effusions that aren't caused by cancer, to help them breathe better and reduce their visits to hospital. The collaborative project includes partners from the Institute for Respiratory Health, The University of Western Australia, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Centre, Bristol Academic Respiratory Unit and Edith Cowan University (ECU) #pleuralresearch #lungresearchsuperpower

Congrats to Professor Yuben Moodley who received a $50,000 Innovative Challenge 2023 – Generative Artificial Intelligence grant, part of the Western Australia (WA) Future Health Research and Innovation Fund. His research aims to develop a super pill that could treat multiple diseases related to conditions like lung disease, heart problems and diabetes simultaneously. Professor Yuben said: “This could bring many potential benefits for older people; it would offer a more cost-effective and convenient alternative while potentially minimising the side effects from taking several medications daily. “Artificial Intelligence (AI) will play a big part in our research, acting like a super-smart assistant to help us get results sooner.” Learn more - https://lnkd.in/eudnT3mv #lungresearchsuperpower #artificialintelligence
