Water security is essential to support a growing Melbourne. Every day, we collect, store, treat, and supply water to keep our city running. But warmer temperatures and growing demand are putting increased pressure on Melbourne’s water storages. By 2030, nearly 6 million Melburnians will need water every day. As our city grows we’re continuing to focus on: ➡️ Planning ahead to ensure access to safe, reliable drinking water ➡️ Alternative water sources to reduce our reliance on rainfall ➡️ Partnering with government, Traditional Owners, and the water industry to secure supply for generations to come. Our Price Submission 2026 will outline proposed investments to keep our water services resilient. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gBVCxM2v #MelbourneWater #PriceSubmission2026

Meet Michael Napoleone, a third-generation farmer in the Yarra Valley. Water is essential to growing top-quality produce - chances are, you’ve enjoyed one of their apples! While the Yarra Valley is known for its cool climate, it also experiences dry spells. The Yarra River runs through one Michael's properties at Rich Red Fruits, providing an important water source for their crops. But water from our waterways isn’t freely available to take at any time. As the licensing authority for the Yarra Valley, Melbourne Water ensures fair and sustainable access to water. Farmers and growers need a licence to take water, with regulations on when and how much can be used - helping to balance the needs of businesses, communities, and the environment. 💧🌾🔄 Watch the video to hear Michael’s story and learn how his family works with Melbourne Water as a licence holder. #MelbourneWater #WaterManagement #YarraValley #SustainableFarming

Building Water Security: The Role of Recycled Water in Melbourne In Melbourne, not all water needs to be drinkable. By using high-quality recycled water for non-drinking purposes, we’re protecting our precious drinking water reserves and securing water supplies for the future. A great example of this in action is Carl from Botanix Plant Supply. His plant nursery uses recycled water sourced from Melbourne Water’s Eastern Treatment Plant and South East Water. This sustainable water source allows him to ensure his business can grow (literally) while reducing the strain on Melbourne’s drinking water supplies. At Melbourne Water, we treat and reuse millions of litres of water each year. This recycled water is used for: 💧 Irrigating crops and green spaces 💧 Industrial processes 💧 Supporting biodiversity in our waterways By integrating recycled water into our water management strategy, we’re ensuring a resilient, sustainable water future for our city. #MelbourneWater #RecycledWater #WaterSecurity

We're rethinking water management in the Werribee Catchment 💧 As one of Victoria’s fastest-growing regions, the Werribee River catchment is expected to welcome an additional 1 million people over the next 30 years. This growth brings challenges in managing recycled water, stormwater, and adapting to a drying climate while ensuring a sustainable future for local food production. In partnership with Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, Southern Rural Water, Greater Western Water and Traditional Owners, we are rethinking how water is used in the catchment to deliver reliable, fit-for-purpose recycled water for irrigation to ease pressure on the Werribee River. We are also looking at how we can re-distribute recovered water for Traditional Owners, the environment, and urban needs. We’re proud to collaborate on securing water for communities, the environment, and future generations. Stay tuned! Heatwave Pressure: How we kept Melbourne’s water flowing 🌡️💦 On February 3, when temperatures hit 38°C, we delivered a record-breaking 2017ML of water to Greater Melbourne, Geelong, and Westernport - that’s 807 Olympic swimming pools worth! 🏊♀️💦 This was the first time in 20 years we’ve exceeded 2,000ML in a day. Huge thanks to our Water Supply Operations teams and supporting staff for keeping high-quality drinking water flowing to millions of Melburnians, even in extreme conditions. While we work hard to keep up with demand, we all have a role to play in making every drop count. During heatwaves, simple steps can make a big difference: 🚿 Take shorter showers 🌱 Water your garden early in the morning 💧 Don’t leave taps running #MelbourneWater #MakeEveryDropCount
