About us
MESHA raises awareness and funds to support health and wellbeing research and programs into conditions such as Post-Traumatic Stress for the nation’s veterans, emergency service personnel and their families. We promote and improve health and wellbeing for veterans, emergency service personnel and their families across Australia. The Road Home was established as Foundation Daw Park in 1995 by veterans to raise funds for medical research and patient care facilities at the Repatriation General Hospital (RGH) in Adelaide. In 2012, the name was changed to The Repat Foundation. The Repat Foundation contributed significantly to Veterans’ and Service Personnel’s Health and Wellbeing Research. Funds directly supported medical and scientific research including areas of health such as Alzheimer’s disease, Post-Traumatic Stress, Prostate cancer, Rheumatoid arthritis, Colon cancer, Heart disease, Respiratory disease, Urological disorders, Sleep disorders, Communication difficulties and Diabetes. In addition to this, the Foundation also provided vital equipment for rehabilitation and for amputees. In 2015, the South Australian government announced its intention to close the RGH. After careful consideration by The Board, a partnership with SA based charity The Hospital Research Foundation was formed to ensure The Repat Foundation’s strong future in supporting health and wellbeing research and projects for veterans’, emergency service personnel and their families. In November 2015 we launched ‘The Road Home’, to strengthen our position as a leading national veterans’ health and wellbeing research organisation and align with the government’s proposed $15 million Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Centre of Excellence. Built on the world-leading independent research supported by The Repat Foundation over the last 20 years, The Road Home drives this forward to aid the health and wellbeing of veteran’s, emergency service personnel and their families on a national scale.

This Women’s Health Week, we’re shining a light on the important work of Prof. Sharon Lawn and her Flinders University research team. Her recent study, 'No Women's Land' examines the challenges women face in a predominantly male population in the military. Women in the military face unique challenges. Most research focuses on men’s experiences, leaving women’s stories untold. It is important we understand this to support diversity and recruitment in the military. A recent study interviewed 22 Australian women veterans to understand their journey in a male majority military culture and their transition to civilian life. Here are the key findings: Fitting In: Women often struggle to fit in and manage their identity within the military. Gender-Based Challenges: They face challenges like proving their worth, trying to blend in, and using survival strategies in a culture that values masculinity. Being Valued Less: Women often feel less valued than men, facing issues like misogyny, sexual harassment, and a lack of recognition for their specific health needs and roles as mothers. Transitioning to Civilian Life: After leaving the military, women veterans often feel invisible and unsupported in the civilian world. Marg Rogers is the lead researcher for Child and Family Resilience Programs (CFRP) collection of personalised story-book style resources and programs for children from Defence, Veteran, First Responder & Remote Worker (FIFO & DIDO) families. These resources are designed to tackle the full spectrum of wellbeing issues that are common amongst these families such as parents working away, parents doing dangerous jobs and how to address parental service-related mental health issues. MESHA's Director; Dr Karen May has been proud to work on these resources with a group of expert and lived experience authors. It has been a very rewarding project! The latest is the first resource for families on moral injury. We'd love your feedback. For more information go to https://lnkd.in/ghfvidFy
