As we enter the second block of the Babcock Australia & New Zealand Emergency Services Art Group Pilot Program, we’re embracing a special focus on the holiday season. 🎄🎨 Led by Kaz Pedersen, this phase of the program is providing emergency service personnel with a creative outlet to manage the additional pressures and emotions that often arise around Christmas—a time that can be particularly challenging for many. Through art, participants can find a space to reflect, express their feelings, and build resilience while connecting with others who share similar experiences. Thank you to the dedicated team at RSL Care SA's War Veterans' Home for your participation in our Aged Care specific pilot of our Military Cultural Awareness Training workshop. This week’s session was a powerful reminder of the importance of understanding military culture to provide meaningful support for veterans. It was inspiring to see the commitment of each participant as they engaged in open discussions, shared insights, and connected with each other over ways to practically apply learnings from the course to enhance the level of care for their residents whilst also taking good care of themselves.  As we work together to improve veteran care, fostering this kind of cultural competency in the care for veterans, we can make a real difference. Thanks to Babcock Australia & New Zealand, our new pilot art program for first responders is led by art tutor Kaz Pedersen and runs across two four-week blocks, focusing on art as a powerful tool for self-expression and relaxation. The first block kicked off in September, welcoming both current and retired first responders. 🎨 Kaz shared that most participants come without any art background but are eager to explore creative alternatives to physical activity. “Through the art process, they could be more present and focused,” she said. Welcome to the CIMVHR - Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research Forum for 2024! 🇦🇺🇨🇦 Our intrepid travelling researchers, Dr. Henry Bowen , Murray Nankivell, and Program Director Dr Karen May have touched down in Canada and are getting ready to be run off their feet for the next 3-days at the CIMVHR's annual forum for military and veteran health researchers.  Here's what Day 1 held for our team.  Karen and Henry attended the GARNET Families workshop with a group of other service families researchers on how best to advance support for current and former first responder and military families led by Prof. Heidi Cramm Monday saw the official kick off #CIMVHRForum2024 with insightful discussions at The 2024 Families Roundtable: Navigating Change and Supporting Military, Veteran, and Public Safety Families workshop, followed by an address by Surgeon General, Canadian Armed Forces Major-General S.F. Malcolm MSC CD MD, during the opening plenary.

We’re proud to announce that Babcock Australia & New Zealand is supporting a new pilot art program for first responders through Military and Emergency Services Health Australia (MESHA) together with The Hospital Research Foundation Group - Creative Health charities of The Hospital Research Foundation Group. 🎨 These programs aim to create a safe, nurturing space for participants to explore their creativity and support their wellbeing. Together, we are helping create an opportunity for them to express thoughts and feelings through art in a safe environment and support their mental health and wellbeing. Beginning last month, this program is already making a meaningful impact on our first responders. Stay tuned for more updates on these programs and the positive impact they are having on our community!

We’re thrilled to celebrate a special milestone for our very own Dr. Henry Bowen, who recently got married in San Francisco! 💍 Henry is truly a cornerstone of MESHA. As our Research and Training Lead, they always lead with care, collaboration and a deep commitment to supporting those around them. It’s moments like these that remind us that it’s the personal connections and shared celebrations that help us build a genuine, caring community.
