  • In celebration of World Occupational Therapy Day on 27 October, we had the privilege of speaking with Micaela, a Senior Occupational Therapist working in community palliative care at Sydney Local Health District. Micaela shared her journey with us into occupational therapy and the profound impact occupational therapists, also known as OTs have on the lives of patients and their families. "I didn’t know much about occupational therapy until I completed a placement with a family member in healthcare,” Micaela said. "It opened my eyes to how OTs holistically support people in maintaining independence and staying safe at home." Her role has evolved into a highly specialised area, working in community palliative care. Micaela highlighted the deep connections formed in her role: "The connections that you make with family members and your patients and them welcoming you into their home, I think is quite special. To be able to support someone through that particular journey and to enable them to stay at home and fulfil any wishes that they have, I think is quite special. That's what I really enjoy about being an OT." She also shared a recent story about helping a patient to stay safely at home with the support of their family. "We provide education on how to physically care for someone, especially when they’re bed-bound, ensuring families feel empowered and prepared to care for their loved ones." Thank you, Micaela, for your dedication and the incredible work you do! We are incredibly grateful for the compassion and skill of our occupational therapists and wish to celebrate all our OTs who empower and uplift patients and their families through compassionate care. 👏 #WorldOTDay #OccupationalTherapy #SydneyLocalHealthDistrict

  • Did you know that the Sydney Dental Hospital Flatiron building, located in the heart of the CBD, opened its doors in 1940? Designed by renowned architects Stephenson, Meldrum, and Turner, this building reflects the Inter-War functionalist style. It was originally planned to have 11 stories but opened with seven, with the option to add more floors later. Two additional stories were added in 1948. Flatiron buildings, like this one, were uniquely designed to fit on irregular land plots with acute corners, making them iconic structures in urban landscapes.

  • As we celebrate Podiatry Week from 14 to 20 October, we would like to take a moment to recognise the incredible work of our Sydney Local Health District Podiatrists. Lily, one of our dedicated podiatrists in SLHD, talks about some of the work she and team do. Podiatry roles span providing care for patients with osteoarthritis as part of the Osteoarthritis Chronic Care Program (OACCP ) team, management of painful foot conditions and the prevention and management of limb-threatening complications as part of interdisciplinary High Risk Foot Service (HRFS). My colleagues have contributed to the evidence about the management of foot conditions through published research, as well as the development models of care and data collection to improve care of patients attending High Risk Foot Services nationally. As a podiatrist, Lily gets great satisfaction from the impact she has on her patient's health and wellbeing. "It comes down to sometimes even small things like removing a pesty nail or ingrown toenail, and just seeing that they can walk after and their quality of life is immediately improved after my intervention." At the HRFS, Lily collaborates as part of a team to manage active wounds and help prevent amputations. Her work is crucial in easing the burden on patients living with foot complications. Within the OACCP , Lily focuses on helping those with osteoarthritis to maintain mobility and quality of life. In one memorable case, during a routine foot assessment, Lily’s attentiveness led to detecting an irregular heartbeat in a patient. Her quick action resulted in a life-saving referral to their GP, showing the far-reaching impact podiatrists can have on overall health. As we celebrate Podiatry Week, we acknowledge the essential role podiatrists like Lily play — not only in maintaining foot health but also in identifying and addressing broader health risks. Thank you to all the Podiatrists working at Sydney Local Health District, your care and skill are instrumental to the health of our community. • 🌿 Did you know The Green was first landscaped in 1942 and used as a bowling lawn by convalescing soldiers, staff and visitors? As part of hospital architects Stephenson and Turner’s Modernist architectural ideals, hospitals in their view needed to have an ‘affinity with nature’, and open green spaces, where patients could enjoy themselves as they convalesced. These ideals are embraced today as we recognise the importance of green space to mental health and wellbeing.
