About us
Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) delivers health care to more than a million people living in the state’s fastest growing region, and is home to several centres of clinical expertise including the National Pancreas Transplant Unit, the NSW Trauma Centre and the NSW Brain Injury Unit. We combine world-class clinical and research facilities with a commitment to compassionate, professional care. WSLHD includes five major hospitals - Westmead, Blacktown, Cumberland, Mount Druitt and Auburn - and more than 800 specialist clinics and services. We employ more than 14,000 people. We provide public health care to 120 suburbs in the Parramatta City, Blacktown City, Hills Shire and Cumberland local government areas, spanning 780 square kilometres. Our catchment is a rich tapestry of culture, people and beliefs. WSLHD is home to NSW Health's largest infrastructure spend, with $2 billion being invested in projects including the Westmead Precinct and Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals. We have an enviable record in medical research, innovation and education that will only be enhanced by these redevelopments. Our future has never looked brighter.

Westmead Hospital's Inpatient Pharmacy team recently held a morning tea, coming together to recognise Diwali. Staff gathered in the tea room, with some dressed to the nines in cultural outfits, listening to Yogi Mishra, Indrani Rajbhandari and Anita Sivasubramaniam talk about how different cultures celebrate Diwali. Jane Haque, Senior Pharmacy Technician, organised the event with the help of her peers. She emphasised the importance of celebrating holidays like Diwali. "I encourage everyone to celebrate cultures and traditions. Western Sydney is such a multicultural and diverse community, it is important for us to acknowledge and celebrate our team's cultural and religious holidays."

In a remarkable display of medical innovation, Westmead Hospital’s Professor Michael Bourke, Director of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, played a pivotal role in changing the radio presenter James Valentine’s cancer journey. Originally set for a life-changing surgery to remove his oesophagus after being diagnosed with oesophageal cancer, James was presented with an alternative approach by Michael, sparing him from the invasive procedure. Patients who require surgery across WSLHD hospitals will no longer need to fluid fast hours for many hours before surgery, thanks to the ‘Sip Til Send’ initiative. This program allows surgical patients to sip up to 200ml of clear fluids per hour until called to theatre. Fasting instructions for solid foods however remain the same as a minimum of six hours. “Patients who sip clear fluids before surgery can be better hydrated, comfortable, and less anxious. It can help maintain stable blood pressure and blood sugar levels, enhancing patient recovery." Dr Puneet Ranote, BMDH project lead and Anaesthetist.
