Earlier this year, Reground led resource recovery efforts at the Formula 1 Grand Prix, rescuing 740 kilograms of ground coffee. We’re thrilled to have done it all again at the 2024 MotoGP in Phillip Island! 🏍️ Coffee and sport are central to Melbourne’s identity - so why aren’t more large-scale events taking accountability for their waste? At the MotoGP, we diverted 640 kilograms of ground coffee, preventing 1,216 kilograms of harmful emissions from entering the atmosphere. Even better, all the recovered coffee grounds were sent to Melbourne Zoo for their in-house composting system, keeping resources out landfill and in our local community. As more major sporting events approach, we continue to challenge event organizers to prioritise sustainability and implement hyper-local solutions. Doing nothing in 2024 is simply not an option. Need help driving resource recovery at your next event? Get in touch with our team! 🙌 #MotoGP

Moonee Valley City Council plans to introduce FOGO recycling streams to multi-unit dwellings (MUDs) by 2025. 1 in 6 Aussies call an apartment home. Living in these spaces can present unique challenges like space limitations and low engagement rates. Reground conducted 480 visual audits and presented 262 MUDs with the opportunity to recycle organic waste. Here are some key results: ♻️ MUDs with existing FOGO services showed lower contamination overall. ♻️ Over two-thirds of respondents indicated they were highly likely to continue using the FOGO service. Local shopping centres often struggle with low resource recovery rates. But why is this the case? Most shopping centres have limited access to diverse recycling streams, typically only offering general waste and mixed recycling. This lack of infrastructure, combined with inadequate recycling education, results in valuable resources being lost to landfill. This is where Reground comes in. We are partnering with local shopping centers to empower traders and management with the skills necessary to actively participate in the circular economy. Earlier this year, Reground successfully completed a project involving 14 councils and 125 businesses, implementing cost-effective, scalable solutions to commercial waste and recycling challenges. This initiative included promoting the shared use of bins among businesses, offering an affordable and scalable approach to improving recycling access. In that project, we worked with a variety of business types: hospitality, retail, hair and beauty, grocery, and service sectors - providing us with valuable insights that we’re now applying to our current work with shopping centers. As we move forward, our team will be testing and refining the most effective methods to engage traders, ensuring widespread participation and maximising resource recovery. This project is supported by the Circular Economy Innovation Fund as part of the Circular Economy Business Innovation Centre (CEBIC). CEBIC is delivered by Sustainability Victoria on behalf of the Victorian Government. #VicGoesCircular

It's inspiring to see the incredible work Pentridge Community Garden is doing to tackle food waste in their community! 🙌 Reground has been proud to support the garden since day one, supplying ground coffee for their composting system. Diverting coffee from landfill is great, but helping our local gardens thrive is just as fulfilling! We’re continuously inspired by how communities come together to drive the circular economy forward. This is what it’s all about - putting people and planet first.
Our recent research found 80% of Victorians are motivated to use their food and garden organics bins correctly by knowing that it’s turned into products used locally. Channel 9 News Melbourne joined our CEO Matt Genever at Pentridge Community Garden to showcase how the food scraps collected in lime green bins can become valuable compost that helps grow fresh fruit and veg in our suburbs. 👨🌾

How it started vs how it's going. ⏩ Reground is proud to have partnered with Merri-bek City Council on many projects over the years, but one of our favourites was the Glass Collection Points project, where we helped establish practical and accessible glass recycling points for Merri-bek residents. In response to the Victorian Government’s statewide kerbside reform designed to improve recycling services across the state - local councils have been working to standardise the four-bin system. Merri-bek City Council engaged Reground to ensure all residents had access to Food and Garden Organics (FOGO) and Glass recycling services, alongside their existing General Waste and Mixed Recycling. In cases where introducing private bins for these new streams wasn’t feasible, we implemented shared glass collection points to offer residents easy access to new recycling streams. Reground identified and installed 13 community glass collection points to service shared-waste areas, and conducted 10 weeks of monitoring and evaluation to ensure the system was meeting residents' needs. Over 1,600 households; primarily in apartments, townhouses, and units were serviced, with contamination rates kept under 10%. We look forward to continuing our work with Council to improve waste systems for all Victorians! 🙌

Reground is collaborating with local shopping centers and up to 30 traders per center to deliver essential education and upskilling opportunities, empowering businesses to actively participate in the local circular economy. Our mission is clear: to reduce the amount of valuable resources sent to landfill. 🌱 Here’s how we’re launching this initiative: ♻️ Surveying traders to assess their current understanding of circular economy principles and waste behaviors, establishing a baseline to identify key areas for growth. ♻️ Conducting visual waste audits, where our team meticulously analyses waste streams across 20+ categories. This analysis helps us understand waste volumes and patterns to identify existing barriers - allowing our team to provide actionable recommendations to enhance functionality, aesthetics, and resource recovery opportunities. This project is supported by the Circular Economy Innovation Fund as part of the Circular Economy Business Innovation Centre (CEBIC). CEBIC is delivered by Sustainability Victoria on behalf of the Victorian Government. #VicGoesCircular

In August, Ninna Katrine Larsen embarked on a European journey, engaging with global leaders in the circular economy. At Reground, we believe in sharing knowledge, not gatekeeping. We're here to celebrate innovative solutions worldwide and bring that inspiration back home. Introducing Emma Hallgreen from Aarhus Kommune! 👋 In partnership with TOMRA, Aarhus launched Denmark’s first city-wide cup return system, addressing the 300 million single-use cups wasted annually. What stands out about this initiative: ✅ The machines are conveniently located in public spaces, increasing accessibility. ✅ Reusable cups come in various sizes, accommodating most drink types. ✅ Café's have found the system easy to adopt, with some eliminating single-use cups entirely. Australia continues to grapple with single-use cup waste, but solutions like this demonstrate how government-led programs can empower the hospitality sector to embrace reuse. There’s plenty to learn from Denmark's success - let’s take note, Australia!

What an incredible effort by our friends at Coffee Supreme! ☕️ Since 2014, Reground has teamed up with Melbourne's most progressive cafes and roasters to divert ground coffee, chaff and soft plastic from landfill. Watching our partners hit these impressive milestones and take pride in their positive impact is exactly why we do what we do! Our mission has always been to transform how the hospitality industry views and manages waste. With the support of amazing partners like Coffee Supreme, we're making that goal a reality! 🙌
We've been hitting some incredible milestones lately, and we’re excited to share them with you. Since 2019, we’ve teamed up with Reground to tackle waste head-on, recovering ground coffee, soft plastic and chaff from landfill—what they like to call the ultimate trifecta. So far, we’ve diverted 16,580 kilograms of ground coffee (that’s over 460,000 lattes), 4,643 kilograms of chaff and 4,967 kilograms of soft plastic. This effort has helped us avoid 44,297 kilograms of harmful emissions into the atmosphere. But this goes beyond the numbers. When organic waste like coffee breaks down in landfill, it produces methane—a greenhouse gas that’s 28 times more harmful than carbon dioxide. Plus, it wastes all the rich nutrients that coffee grounds have to offer. Through Reground, we’re turning that waste into a valuable resource by sending coffee grounds directly to community gardens and local growers, where those rich nutrients can work their magic.
