This Food Waste Action Week, we're spotlighting real action in the fight against food waste. Here at End Food Waste Australia, our Cooperative Research Centre certainly drives a lot of action and you can swipe for some highlights. Research is at the heart of everything we do, it’s the key to finding smarter solutions, shifting policies, and driving real action, like transforming wine grape waste into high-value nutraceutical ingredients or understanding what behaviours need to change to reduce household food waste. Over the past seven years, our Cooperative Research Centre has been addressing food waste problems, building knowledge and capacity in industry and providing the evidence base for policy interventions and consumer behaviour change. It’s Food Waste Action Week, and we’ve got more exciting news: Australians are taking real action against food waste. New research shows that since The Great Unwaste campaign began inspiring and supporting Australians to take on food waste, we are rethinking how we manage food at home. The average household used to waste 4.22 kg of food each week, twice what people thought! But now, 90% of us feel responsible for cutting food waste. This shift in mindset is cooking up real change with 78% of respondents now incorporating ‘leftover nights’ into their flexible meal planning. With the average household throw out $2,500 worth of food each year, these small changes can make a BIG impact! Halving the amount of food waste sent to landfill? Now that’s food waste action. It’s Food Waste Action Week and we are taking a moment to celebrate some of the achievements, the impact, the ‘good news’ on this issue. Since the launch of the #AustralianFoodPact, businesses who have committed to reducing food waste (known as Signatories) have made action a priority – measuring, targeting and reducing their food waste. One of the highlights? They’ve more than halved the amount of food waste sent to landfill since 2022. This has financial benefits too, as by avoiding landfill levies, Signatories have collectively saved an estimated $2 million in fees alone. Food waste action on a major scale isn't just good for the planet, it’s also just good business. It's Food Waste Action Week, and we are taking the time to celebrate all the action that is being made against food waste - from paddock to plate. To kick us off, we're chatting with Mandy Hall about how The Great Unwaste campaign is empowering Australian households to reduce food waste at home. The Great Unwaste campaign is based on research from the End Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre, which identified 7 simple behaviors Australians can adopt at home, along with recipes and creative ideas to make reducing food waste easy and fun. Thank you Andrew McLachlan CSC. We appreciate the support - and clear passion - for our continued efforts fighting food waste in Australia.
“Cutting food waste is a delicious way of saving money, helping to feed the world and protect the planet.” - Tristram Stuart Every year, we waste 7.6 million tonnes of food—enough to fill the MCG ten times over. That waste costs Australians $36 billion annually, while 1 in 6 Australians struggle to put food on the table. In a country as resourceful as ours, that’s unacceptable. The solution is clear: targeted investment in food waste reduction. The Australian Government has committed to halving food loss waste (FLW) by 2030 through the 2017 National Food Waste Strategy (NFWS). End Food Waste Australia, through funded efforts, is on track to reduce food waste by 1.4MT a year by 2030, achieving 31% of Australia’s projected food waste obligation target of 4.6MT. I met with Dr Steve Lapidge last week to discuss End Food Waste Australia’s 2025-2026 Federal Government budget proposal. This is a costed, strategic plan to cut waste in half by 2030. With modest government support, we can: - Save Australian households up to $2,500 per year on grocery bills - Boost food security without increasing production - Strengthen local industries and reduce costs for businesses - Cut emissions by preventing food from ending up in landfill This isn’t about handouts—it’s about pragmatic, high-impact investment that pays for itself in economic, environmental, and social benefits. We have the plan, the partners, and the momentum. Now, we need the commitment to get it done. It’s time to back a smarter, more efficient Australia. Let’s stop throwing billions in the bin. #FoodWaste #EconomicCommonSense #SustainableFuture #EndFoodWaste

Investing in the fight to end food waste is critical for our nation and it is with continued awareness that we can create change from farm to plate. Ahead of International Women’s Day tomorrow, this award is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge Mandy and the talented and hard-working women in food waste and food systems. Their collective expertise elevates the industry to play a vital role in the work to reduce food waste. Did you know that 83% of Australia’s supermarket sector, including ALDI Stores Australia, Coles Group, Metcash, and Woolworths Supermarkets are on board with the Australian Food Pact? They’re already taking big steps to reduce food waste and show sustainability leadership in the industry. Today, we’re proud to launch our 'Guide to Food Waste Reduction for Australian Retailers'. This guide shares best-practice initiatives to help retailers reduce food waste across the supply chain, within their operations, and by supporting their customers at home. It also provides practical steps to design a tailored food waste reduction roadmap. Having worked closely with retailers since our inception, the #australianfoodpact is here to support all retailers - big and small - because reducing food waste isn’t just good for people and the planet, it’s good for business too.
