Supporting Neuroscience Research to Advance Prevention and Treatment of Brain, Spinal Cord and Neuromuscular Diseases
About us
Since 1992, the Royal Melbourne Hospital Neuroscience Foundation has raised funds and supported research in the neurosciences at The Royal Melbourne Hospital - and selected projects at The University of Melbourne - to advance the prevention and treatment of Brain Tumour, Epilepsy, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Dementia, Movement Disorders, Neuro-Radiology and Peripheral Neuropathy. This world-renowned, on-going research can only continue due to the support of our voluntary and regular donors, community groups and commercial sponsors, as well as our committed Board of Trustees.

On World Stroke Day, we highlight a visit from President of the World Stroke Organization, Professor Sheila Cristina Ouriques Martins, who joined our stroke and neurology teams earlier this month to formally endorse the Comprehensive Stroke Centre certification to Head of Unit, Professor Bruce Campbell. Flying in from Brazil, Professor Martins toured the RMH as a show of support for the certification from the Australian Stroke Coalition (ASC), a joint initiative between the Stroke Foundation and the Stroke Society of Australasia. The Comprehensive Stroke Centre Certification is internationally recognised by the World Stroke Organization and the World Health Organization. The department and ward were recognised for their high standard of stroke care, reflecting the ASC’s strict certification criteria which includes treating stroke patients on a single dedicated ward, providing specialist staffing, regular training, data monitoring and improvement, and patient involvement in decision making. The Royal Melbourne Hospital joins a list of only eight Australian hospitals to receive this prestigious certification.

To close out the RMH Research Conference yesterday, one of our inaugural Trustees, Professor Stephen Davis AO, has been inducted into the prestigious RMH Research Hall of Fame. Professor Davis has been honoured for his exceptional work as a neurologist and clinician-scientist, particularly in the field of stroke research and the use of advanced imaging. Professor Davis has been pivotal in advancing neuroscience research both nationally and internationally. His transformative trials have redefined acute stroke therapy and improved treatment accessibility, and significantly shaped international stroke treatment guidelines. His pioneering efforts with the Melbourne Mobile Stroke Unit have introduced faster, pre-hospital stroke treatments, directly benefiting countless patients. Professor Davis is also the founder of the RMH Melbourne Brain Centre, and co-lead of the Australian Stroke Alliance and the Frontiers MRFF grant. A well-deserved accolade, Prof!
