Last night on World Mental Health Day, Bill Kaloudis represented STH on the panel at the 'Designing Recovery: Lived Experiences, Support, and Spaces in Mental Health Care' event. Craig Wallace from Lived Experience Psychology offered valuable insights from a consumer's perspective, while Bill shared his expertise on mental health from a designer’s point of view. The panel also featured two clinical mental health experts, Jennifer Glass and Dean Bilton. Here are some of the comments from attendees: "It was instructive to hear genuine lived experience of the mental health system, but in addition the panel discussion on design (including co-design) provided worthwhile insights into delivering patient-centric mental health facilities." "The lived experience presentation is extremely valuable to hear firsthand. Good to know there are some experienced advocates within the industry, we need more understanding and action to see how we can overcome design challenges our industry face daily. The concept of "positive risk" is my key takeout from the discussion." "Continued governing body research into best practice can only be positive with concept rooms developed for designers to use as a base agreed design. Space allocation, special joinery, access to light and views, furniture approved supplier options, anti-ligature standards etc" "More like this please." An excellent event discussing important topics in mental health design 👏 Dean Bilton Kingsway Group AU Crown Furniture

We’re excited to share the completion of the Centre for Eye Research Australia’s (CERA) new research and clinical trials space, led by STH - Silver Thomas Hanley. This state-of-the-art facility will significantly enhance Australia's capabilities in world-class eye research and clinical care. Our collaboration with CERA included: — Developing an Operating Model to optimise essential processes. — Crafting a Functional Design Brief to outline design principles, outcomes, and a detailed Schedule of Accommodation. — Conducting an Accommodation Options Analysis to assess existing infrastructure alongside offsite alternatives. STH worked closely with CERA to deliver a contemporary facility that prioritises the Melbourne cityscape and brings together research, clinical trials, and cutting-edge laboratories. Spanning 3460m², the fresh new space supports world-class eye research and patient care, featuring flexible workspaces, reception areas, staff breakouts, and advanced imaging facilities. As the architects for the new Swan Hill District Health emergency department, Silver Thomas Hanley (STH) is thrilled to share that progress at the redevelopment has passed the halfway mark. The designs for the redevelopment will double the points of care of the existing facility to alleviate pressure on existing services and decrease wait-times for locals, providing patients with improved access to emergency services, right where they need it— closer to home and loved ones. We are beyond excited to congratulate Health Infrastructure on their well-deserved win in the Infrastructure Design and Planning category at the IAP2 Core Values Awards! As the lead architects for the new Tweed Valley Hospital, Silver Thomas Hanley (STH) and design partners Bates Smart are incredibly proud to have contributed to a project that embraced community collaboration so deeply. This award reflects the meaningful and inclusive engagement that shaped the hospital and its connection to the local Northern Rivers community. A huge congratulations to the entire team and everyone involved in bringing this vision to life!
We are thrilled to announce Health Infrastructure has won the Infrastructure Design and Planning category at the IAP2 Core Value Awards! Our success with the new Tweed Valley Hospital Development, which officially opened in May 2024, highlights the power of community engagement in creating health facilities that truly support their communities. A cornerstone of this project was our strong collaboration with the local community including local Aboriginal groups, South Sea Islander communities, and other key stakeholders. From the outset, we prioritised inclusive and innovative engagement strategies. By integrating arts programs, hosting local career expos, and organising garden picnics and planting workshops, we connected with the community in meaningful and culturally relevant ways. The 'GARDEN | Healing together' sculpture, co-created with community input, stands as a symbol of this collaboration and the shared pride in the new hospital. A huge thank you to our incredible engagement team Linda Brandon, Sarah McEwan and Monique Wakefield, with the support of project leaders Amanda Bock, Mark Brockbank and Tim Mason, and all the other dedicated workers and our partners who made this project a success. Your dedication to inclusivity, cultural respect, and innovation has not only delivered a state-of-the-art facility but has also set a new benchmark for healthcare infrastructure in NSW. Thank you to everyone involved, especially our community partners, for making this vision a reality. This award is a testament to what we can achieve when we engage inclusively, respect cultural identities, and innovate together. Congratulations to everyone involved, and best of luck at the awards!
HI is thrilled that our community and stakeholder engagement efforts on the Tweed Valley Hospital Development project have been recognised as a finalist for the 2024 IAP2 Core Values Award. This nomination is a testament to the pivotal role meaningful community engagement played in the success of the Tweed Valley Hospital. HI prioritised collaboration with the local community at every stage, ensuring that their needs, aspirations, and concerns were at the heart of the hospital planning, design, and development process. HI’s approach included the formation of an inclusive Community Reference Panel and the introduction of innovative engagement initiatives such as the 'GARDEN | Healing together' sculpture and the 'Garden Picnic – Seedling Workshop.' These efforts created a deep sense of community ownership and pride, resulting in a facility that truly reflects the values and needs of the people it serves. Congratulations to the Tweed Valley Hospital project team and all the community members who contributed to this achievement! The winners of the IAP2 Core Values Award will be announced on September 3, 2024.
