Last night marked the 30th meeting of the Star of the South Community Advisory Group, a forum established in 2020 to seek advice from and share information with the community about the project. We believe that involving local people from the very beginning makes projects better. The Community Advisory Group has played an active role in shaping Star of the South by sharing local perspectives, feedback and Gippslander's expectations of this new industry. Over the past four years, members have developed an in-depth understanding of offshore wind which they can share with their neighbours. Allan Rogers, a local resident and passionate angler, has been an active member since the group’s inception. “I’ve learned so much about renewable energy and offshore wind. It’s satisfying to be able to share information with my neighbours and help them understand what’s proposed", he said. Last week we joined Business Hunter to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of ResTech. This joint venture between Ampcontrol and University of Newcastle brought industry and academia together to progress solutions for complex challenges, such as the transition to clean energy. We saw these solutions in action, on board a 22 ft vessel powered by a marine plug-in hybrid power system prototype. This cutting-edge technology has been developed in partnership with Australian boat builder Steber International. Meet Adam, our Head of Approvals 👋 Adam has over fifteen years’ experience leading planning and environmental approvals , including several major environmental impact assessments, as well as working as a regulator assessing major projects. Now he's leading the environmental impact assessments for Southerly Ten, with a current focus on our flagship Gippsland project Star of the South. "Working on an environmental assessment for a brand-new Australian industry is an exciting challenge," he said. "I’m really proud to play a role in helping achieve net zero emission goals, and protecting Australia’s unique and valuable environment". How Australia should navigate the path to a clean, reliable and affordable energy system was the focus of The Australian Financial Review Energy and Climate Summit in Sydney. Here are some of our key highlights from the two days: 👉 Hearing Australian Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen talk about the progress that has been made in delivering renewable energy projects - 63 projects were approved last year, enough to power 7 million homes 👉 NSW Minister for Climate Change, Energy, Heritage and the Environment Penny Sharpe sharing that our planning systems weren’t built to deal with the energy transition on the scale needed, which means there’s a lot of work happening on the energy framework 👉 Attending the Energy Awards as a finalist for our community engagement work in Gippsland for Star of the South 👉 Presenting the Sustainability Award to Neoen Australia whose Goyder South project has paved the way for a new national park to preserve the environmentally and culturally significant Worlds End Gorge. The Summit has highlighted the monumental task ahead, which will need whole of government support and priority to keep up the momentum and pace.

We’ve teamed up with other Gippsland offshore wind developers to host ‘Gippsland Offshore Wind Days’ in the region. Across four days, we’ll be talking to locals about offshore wind and our two Gippsland projects, Star of the South and Kut-Wut Brataualung, and listening to ideas and feedback to help shape our projects. Offshore Wind Energy Victoria, VicGrid and the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water will also be there to share information about government energy and transmission plans. The ocean was on the agenda last week in Gadigal Country / Sydney. The Global Nature Positive Summit 2024 delved into the key next steps to repair nature, along with the new opportunities for jobs, businesses and communities. Off the back of the summit, we attended the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water Ocean Dialogue to explore the draft Sustainable Ocean Plan. This critical piece of work seeks to recognise the many ocean uses, opportunities and threats while setting a framework for future ocean planning. As a fast-emerging ocean industry in Australia, with several multi-billion projects in the pipeline, offshore wind can also support thousands of jobs and a healthy ocean economy.
